Cultural: Three King's Holiday - January 6

January 6 is officially "Three King's Day" in Poland.  

In 2011 Parliament decided to make it an official holiday after the communists took it off the list of "days off".  Many people just combine it with the Christmas holiday, and go away on a nice trip after their Christmas celebration on December 24 - for example, to a nice ski lodge or to some place warm such as Egypt or the Seychelles. 

Because it is a relatively new holiday to me, not growing up with anything such as Three King's Holiday, it doesn't have any personal meaning to me. In other words, we don't normally do anything special for it except make sure we don't need any groceries since everything is closed.

We know that the Bible doesn't give the name of the wise men who visited the  young child, Jesus, and Mary and Joseph.  That part is tradition.  Neither does it say that there were exactly three - it only says there were three gifts. (Matthew 2:1-11)

If you are Russian Orthodox, however, January. 7 is your official Christmas day.

A couple weeks ago I met a young man from the Ukraine. He said the believers in his church celebrate both December 25 and January 7.  I'll bet kids would love that!  Obviously they can't do it up big both days--one doesn't have enough adrenaline or money to do so!
