"Joan's Unicorns" - panel quilt top ready to go
I mentioned a few days that I had brought back some panels with me when I came back to Poland. Among those were two unicorn panels as I have a request from my niece’s daughters, Emma and Joan, for quilts from them. Joan, 3, loves purple, and I decided to start with hers.
I know she wants this panel as she told me explicitly that she wants it. Her older sis, Emma, also wants one - but her color is pink!
I haven’t really done a lot of panel quilts except as charity quilts - I wanted something a little more special than what I’ve done for them.
I decided to use what Donna Jordan did for her Big Dream quilt as the base of the idea here. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, go here and watch this video.
I wanted to make it about 60-65” wide by 85” ish so that after quilting it will still be a nice size for these girls for their twin beds.
I brought back purple fabric with me as my purple stash had been worked over pretty badly in previous quilts.
As the heat has been intense, I’ve been limited by pressing. I moved the ironing board to outside, but I don’t really feel like extensive pressing unless I were to put plastic down on the ground to protect the whole top.
Anyway, here it is.
Here is my pile of panels that I want to make up into quilts. I haven’t really used that many panels in my life - except for Batman and Spiderman and some pretty ones for charity quilts. I’m going to try to be a bit more adventurous with the ones I brought back which will probably be gift quilts. I picked most of these up because when I was cutting them, they were rough, or partially cut off - meaning a couple inches shy or something. But not these unicorn ones. I took them right out of inventory.
Here’s the whole panel, by the way - up close. It’s a Timeless Treasures panel that starts out about 24”x42”. Aren’t the colors luscious?
I’m not sure what I think of the blocks I put in the corners.
I had wanted to put something there, but I wanted it easy and fast. This is for a 3 year old - but she will be 4 before she gets it. I had no interest in spending a day making a fantastic paper pieced block or something extensively pieced for those corners. However, I didn’t want just plain lavender, either.
So, I just made a block of purple, shaded so the darkest is in the middle.
It will be fine. It’s one of those things that I’m not totally taken with - but I think I can live with it. I know Joan’s eyes will be on the unicorns in the middle and PURPLE - or as she calls it, “VIOLET”! She’s a cutey and very verbal.
Anyway - this is one thing I managed to get done so I could show you in spite of the blistering heat we’ve been experiencing.
And now you know - this is one of the things I’ve been doing!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
