Cultural: Garden update
First of all, a huge pile of grass clippings - given to me by a man who has a contract mowing grass. I desperately need it! My ground will be much better once it all becomes compost.
Overnight I thought about it and asked my husband to move the grass clippings so the tree trunk wasn't covered up. He is moving it to give the tree some breathing room. In front you see my pumpkin patch. Eventually it should all be filled in with pumpkin leaves - they are growing rapidly during these warm summer days!.
My zucchini plants are growing like gangbusters! I have 19 plants - I think they should start producing in August. Can't wait! I'll have so much zucchini, I'll probably hand one to everyone I see if they even look interested!
I planted sweet corn - fresh sweet corn is wonderful! Hopefully in a week or two the first batch will be ready to eat--I planted it in two plantings, two weeks apart.
Corn - it's tasseling out nicely!
Green beans - I've gotten a couple meals of green beans from my garden - and I have some climbing beans - climbing up the corn - and they haven't started to produce beans yet.
I'm kind of excited about those since I didn't realize I had planted that kind of beans--I had thought they were all bush beans. The bush beans haven't produced much --maybe because most of the plants seem to have disappeared since germination wasn't all that great. I was more interested in the corn than the green beans, though so I'm okay with that. Good thing, huh? It is what it is!
If I need anymore, i can go to the local supermarket or open market and pick some up!
Below are the climbing green beans. They've not started producing yet, but once they start, they should give beans until frost. The bush beans shown above just produce beans for about 2 weeks and are done.
They are climbing the corn plant!
Pumpkins - these are the fun ones! I grow them because they are somewhat less common here, though that is changing pretty fast. Anyway, I have several small pumpkins that are just starting to grow. Hopefully I'll have a good group of them in mid September.
I have at least four kinds of pumpkins planted - Big Max - big yellow, some I planted from Polish seed - jack o lantern, I think, some white pumpkins, and not sure what else. We'll wait and see. Here are just 3 or 4 of the 12 or so plants I have.
This may be one of the white pumpkins. I really don't know yet.
I think this is a Big Max. Since it is so late in the season and they are just starting, I will need to get with the watering every day for the next week or so when it is supposed to be very hot!
I am not sure what these will be! Pumpkins, I hope!
Tomatoes - I have a bunch of them in pots - and they are looking pretty nice. We had a very hot and humid week and I thought I was going to lose them to early blight. So far they are still with me. If I wanted to keep them for sure, I would need to spray them with special spray after each time it rains. However, when we have rainy weeks, it is too hard to do that as I have no intention of running outside every few hours to spray my tomato plants with some chemical spray!
I planted only small tomatoes.
The best way to combat blight is to put them in a greenhouse, but I keep trying to grow them anyway - I have better success in pots than in the ground. We'll see how they do this year.
I have yellow and red round ones and pear shaped ones. I planted big (indeterminate) plants and small (determinate) plants specially for pots. I don't prune the plants as almost everyone here in Poland does but instead I just let them grow as they want to.
And that's all I've got!
And that's all from my garden - it really is quite modest! I enjoy going to it daily once the pumpkins gets big enough to watch grow. When the days are hot and they have water, you can literally see the difference from day to day!
