Cultural: No more daylight savings time for Poland!

The European Commission decided that starting in 2021 they are going to stop changing clocks twice a year.

They decided that it is unnecessary - so each country has to decide whether they want to stay on “summer time” (daylight savings time) or “winter time” (standard time) .

People have let it be known that they don’t like changing their clocks! I can’t say that I am complaining about it.

The article I saw said that it appears that most of Europe wants to stay on summer time permanently. In effect, we would be changing time zones. The idea is that countries that want to stay on permanent summer time will change their clocks one last time in March, 2021 and leave them there. Those who want to stay on winter time will change in the fall of 2021 and leave them that way.

In the past, pretty much most of central Europe all is in the same time zone. While I dislike the early darkness now that we have changed time back to standard time, I hate even more, CHANGING the clocks.

So…this will be a bit of a test for the EU since up to now, the European parliament decided what countries would do with their time. However, this time, they are going to allow each country to decide for themselves.

The Polish parliament has to make an ultimate decision whether we will stay on summer time or winter time, but the majority of Polish people want to stay on summer time. Things are still up in the air as to how it is all going to work out - especially with transport issues. I know, it sounds somewhat humorous to us since Americans are used to the different time zones and somehow planes manage to get to and from their respective states just fine.

The articles are all in Polish, but you can listen here, if you are so inclined.

Here’s one in English by a British newspaper.

Our days are pretty short now - we are as far north as somewhere between Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

I used this map before, but this is the current time zone map of Europe. Poland is marked so you should be able to find it!

Our sunrise is now 6:40 am and sunset is at 3:56 pm. So it is light by 7 am and dark by about 4:15 pm. At the worst, in December, it will be dark by about 3:30 pm and light by 8 am. So, the morning time isn’t too bad, but the evening is not good. Pitch black at 5 pm makes you think it’s much later than it is! We really should be in the time zone with the Ukraine, but we aren’t. We are in the same one as Spain, which is clear across the continent of Europe. In the summer it gets light very early here - by 3 am it’s light (it’s crazy!)

I know I’ve discussed time zones before - but not the fact that we are supposed to be going OFF changing clocks 2x a year starting in 2021. We’ll see if it really happens!

Right now we are 6 hours AHEAD of eastern standard time in the USA.

Does this have anything to do with quilting? Not really.

(I’ve got plenty of light in my sewing room now, so I’m fine in there, day or night!)

I just think, “It’s about time!” (LOL). I dislike the process of adjusting to a new time very much and most of the world has electricity, so we can turn on our lights. I’d just rather have a little more light in the late afternoon than early morning as apparently the majority of Poles would as well.

This is just one of those interesting cultural notes - it may or may not be important to you. We’ll see if it actually happens!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
