Cultural: September 1 - First day back to school!

In Poland generally speaking, all of the regular schools from preschool to high school, begin classes on September 1.

This year everything is odd - but then you knew that!

What normally happens is that there is a general school meeting and all the children meet their new teacher and find out their schedules, The reason I say that is although the school year starts September 1 the actual school day is not regular and the school week will not look the same for everyone from day to day or week to week.

So, when my children were in our local elementary school, we would meet outside on the pavement or soccer field and everyone would meet the teacher, find out what they needed to bring the next day as well as find out what room they were to show up to.

This initial orientation meeting lasted about an hour or an hour and a half. I liked it because it more or less eased the children into starting the year.

So no matter what is actually happening - on line school or in person, or a variation or combination of the two - it all starts September !. Oh, and everyone stands for the whole meeting.

I found it an interesting fact about Poland and though you might too. I liked the consistency of it. You didn’t need to contact your school to find out the starting date if you wanted to have a vacation in August.

If anyone needed to get some supplies for the first day of school, they then had time to go get it that day for the next. Needless to say, some stores were quite busy the rest of that day!

I know it is short and sweet, but it’s how it is.

Today my husband and I are flying from Tampa up to Greenville, SC to see the rest of our children. I’m actually writing this from Enid, OK, on my daughter’s computer.

Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
