Quilted Twins

Geometrics 12 - blue and gray lap size quilt

I’m back to this - skipping number 11 for now. Number 11 will probably be the last one finished as it is planned to be a queen size quilt - the only one of this series which is slated to be so.

Anyway, I am whittling these things down - almost to the end. Almost. I’ve used up my 2.5” strips and as of this writing, in order to finish up top number 14 as planned, I’m having to chop up some of the leftover 4.5” strips to get the size of strips I need. I’m not going out on a limb to say that 14 is it, but we’ll see. Maybe for the last one I will make a piano key border and use up every single piece I can locate!

Anyway……..

For this one I wanted to get to the end of the 2.5” strips - and I pretty much did that with this one and the one that is number 13.

This one is a simple shadow quilt with a 9 patch using two different blues. Unfortunately, the lighter blue didn’t show up well against the very light gray.

Sigh. Another bad choice. But I think it is still kind of a cool look, so I like it in spite of this obvious poor color choice. I will add that it was the only really light blue solid I had left.

I used a cut 2.5” strip as the shadow which sort of makes it feel like they are just “jumping off the background”. I like that. In fact, I like that very much.

What do I like about this other than the fact that the blocks seem to leap off the background? I like the inner blue border against the darker gray border. I like it very much. I tried it out on EQ with various colored borders, but when I clicked on these colors, it just said, “That’s it!” to me. OK, OK…maybe not. I just said that to myself. My quilts don’t actually talk to me though I do often talk to myself.

Actually only the skinnier pieces were from the Polish auction site. he blue plaid and the black polka dots are from my stash. I just thought they went with theme of the front so I made the backing with a variety of blue/white/gray/black prints.

I also made a pieced backing - also from a lot of Polish fabrics that I managed to get in a sale from our auction site - scraps.

Big scraps. I’m actually glad to see them up close, though, as these are from the same companies that I buy the backing fabrics (for charity quilts) from.

This way I can actually see what designs I like or don’t actually like as well ‘up close’ as on the computer screen.

Here is the layout. For this one I used the 2.5” squares for the 9” patches so that means they were 6.5” before I added them to the shadow pieces which also were cut using 2.5” widths. The block finishes at 8.5” before being sewn into the quilt and 8” once the whole quilt is together. Even though it appears by the layout that I used gray cornerstones, I didn’t. I used just strips going across and lined up the blocks as best as I could while using pins to match them up with the block above it. The inner blue border is cut 1.5” wide. The outer gray border is cut 4.5” wide.

This small quilt ends up being 51”x71'“. I really do like this one.

Obviously, this is the “heart” of the quilt - the block.

Hope that helps!

I hope you are enjoying this series of my “little quilts” from geometrics.

Simple.

Quick.

Fun!

That’s the motto for these!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
