Irish Chain Fancy

This quilt is a recent finish from the 2” series of strips and pieces. I made the top last year and finished this one up earlier this year - just haven’t featured it yet. While I’ve got a simple Irish Chain quilt pattern on the site, I don’t have one with the border treatment like this one does and at least a few of you had requested the more complete explanation.

I’m hard pressed to choose a favorite color anymore since I started quilting, but these colors definitely are some of the ones I like the best. As I’ve mentioned previously, however, since I’ve started quilting, I’ve gained an appreciation for all colors!

I pieced the backing:

A lot of my larger pieces I have designated for backing just weren’t the right colors for a quilt like this - so I put one together from 2/3 pieces of fabric.

This simple “Irish Chain” pattern is my all around favorite pattern. Maybe not this one necessarily, but the simple Irish chain. Taking a little square, making it into a 9 patch, alternating it with a plain block and doing that over and over - magic happens. I never cease to be amazed by it.

With this particular pattern, all I did was do a sort of “double border” - first the one with the strip and corner 9 patches, but then the outermost border of just scraps in squares. I liked the effect and it helped me use up a bit more of these small pieces.

I just did some overall curves and such for the quilting.

As usual, I do like to show the quilt roll:

Our winter here has been very mild - so much so that it doesn’t look frozen!

Oh…and I did get the pattern up. It’s here. I hope someone can use it!

Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
