Cultural: Winter Break - 2 week vacation from school!
Here in Poland school kids have 2 weeks off during winter - after Christmas and before Easter.
For us this was a strange break and I wasn’t used to having one so soon after Christmas. But of course, the kids loved it!
What they do is hope that people go to the south part of Poland and go skiing - with their families, of course. Skiing and ski jumping are big industries here in Poland. Poland’s ski jumping men’s team is quite good.
What they do so that the resorts aren’t inundated with the whole country at once is that they split the regions up and divvy up the times and regions when schools have off. They also alternate them from year to year. The first break is probably the least appreciated since it comes 2 weeks or less after the Christmas break and kids are really just getting back into the idea of going to school.
This year they split them up pretty well.
The regions are split up by where you live. Here’s a map.
Winter break is a problem for working parents with children in school. Often one of them has to get off work, though the schools do tend to have activities during this time. Obviously, however, the POINT of the winter break is a break from school and not to keep going back to school for activities!
I was told a long time ago that companies had to allow parents off during this time, but I’m not sure what the status is currently or what is actually the law as opposed to tradition.
And now you know = winter break is a “thing”!
For us, winter goes until March 31 - that’s when spring starts. Sometimes our worst winter weather is actually in February or March.
The ski resorts love it when that happens!
