This isn’t the plan I originally thought I’d do when I figured to make some larger half square triangles (HST) from the solids. I had wanted to make a simple “all the same direction” quilt. Then I started playing with the Electric Quilt program (EQ).

As I work on this series, I think of two main people in my life - first of all my dad - as he loved green - and then my daughter-in-law, Claire, as she also loves green. With the first top in this series, I thought of my dad - all those plaids - but with this one, definitely, I thought of my DIL, Claire.

I have a whole plastic bin of solids. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you perceive it), I can’t really see a difference in how full the box is now that I’ve made this top. I guess I’ll need to make some more that are more “green heavy” and less “white or cream heavy”, so to speak.

But I wanted this look for this one.

All that is different about this one is that I added sashing to break up the look of a plain HST quilt layout.

I really used all the different solid greens I had from the darker box. Yes, I have that many solids - I have two plastic boxes of them - darks/lights! Can you believe it? I guess people like to use solid greens - or at least that is what I found a lot of at the second hand shop!

Just to show you that I’m not exaggerating, here’s a picture!

I don’t have the pattern written for this one yet but it isn’t a difficult one. Let me share the layout right now so if you are intrigued by the look, you don’t really need a pattern - all you need to know is how to make a HST - and if you don’t know yet, you can certainly “google” it and find a lot of helpful posts.

Here’s the layout. I did make the sashing cut 2”, so the shorter ones were 2”x6.5” and then I made long ones across the middle of the quilt - no cornerstones even though the layout looks like they exist. It’s a 12x13 layout.

Stay tuned to see what happens with the rest of these greens - I guess only the Lord knows! What I’ve noticed with these series is that often one quilt “spins” off an idea for the next one - but not always- sometimes I get ideas for 2 or 3 while working with what I’ve got, but sometimes, that doesn’t happen. In that case, it’s a simple “dead end” and I have to go back to the EQ program and start playing again. Of course, in my case, I am better off glancing at my boxes of “what I have” before going wild dreaming of “what I could make if I only had this color”!

But I digress. I hope this one makes you take a second look at all those super simple designs. What a difference a sashing makes!
