"Mosaic" using 2.5" strips/squares
I was able to finish up the “Mosaic” quilt but using 2.5” x4.5” bricks!
I think it is interesting how it turned out. The quilting really “drew it up” a lot more than I was expecting. I’m sure it had to do with the type of quilting. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I had made the top longer so that once quilted, it would be longer. But it’s done already and I’m not taking it all apart and redoing the length.
I can’t even imagine doing that, actually!
In theory, anyway, I suppose this one could be added to without too many problems, though - by taking off the binding on one end only and adding rows and then quilting just the added section. I’ll think about it! :) I suppose I should measure it to see how long it actually is! I’ll let you know about it should decide to do that. When I mentioned it as a possibility to my husband, he just looked at my quizzically this morning and said, “Why would you do that?”
For the quilting - all I did was straight line quilting. I quilted on each side of the seam line. That’s all.
The pattern is the same as the 2” Mosaic I’ve made - the ONLY difference is that I used 2.5”x 4.5” bricks instead of the 2”x 3.5” ones. Obviously then, I could use fewer. This one was made with 49 or 50 rows - I can’t remember without counting them right now.
It is made row by row. And while it may feel unwieldy to make a quilt like this “row by row”, the ensuing unveiling of the design keeps a person going. It is really inspiring to put together a top like this for a change instead of by blocks.
Here is the contrasting photo with the 2” one. I still want to start going on one using 1.5”x2.5” bricks. I think that would be fascinating! Handling those long skinny strips might be a challenge though. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll make it a lap quilt size.
As I was making it, I didn’t realize the difference in the colors I was using until the top was done! I chuckled at the result. I’m okay with it though. I was just digging through my bag of strips and cutting - a bunch at a time, sewing them up, then cutting some more, etc.

And that’s it! I think this one turned out great - as I mentioned before, it shrunk up terribly due to the quilting and that is the only disappointment about this one. I think this is a great all around “scrap user” of a design.
