Quilted Twins

Denim Deluge!

Right around the Quilt Give Away, I had contact with a friend and she asked me if could stop by her place as she had some denim for me, if I wanted it.

How could I say no? I couldn’t. I didn’t.

This is what I got.

We tried to not get too close to each other as she piled a load in my arms and then some in the car. We were already supposed to be isolating socially. I was trying to.

I finally brought them into the house this afternoon to take a closer look at what I had. I had left them in the car as I wasn’t really ready to deal with them quite yet.

She had been given these samples from a company here in our town (Jozefow) and took what she could use and gave the rest to me. I will cut them into big squares or rectangles and make simple denim charity quilts out of them.

It had felt like a motherload of goodies! And sure enough, as I began to actually sort and look at what I had, I realized I got a lot of wonderful fabric! And the best thing? I didn’t have to pay the shipping!!

Quilts from denim will be very popular!

It is all pretty heavy, so I will plan on half inch seams and press them open. I’m also thinking of making them so none of them meet in the corners - making the blocks “half drop”, meaning they would never have to match. It helps eliminate the bulk.

Here it my nice collection!

First of all - here are some things that weren’t denim - they are sort of knits or other fabric types. I am not sure what to do with these yet. I’m thinking. I’ll listen. I may put them with my “things for making fidget mats” as their texture is lovely. But I’m not adverse to trying to make a quilt out of the big pieces.

Then, here are some squares - some. Not too many.

Then I had a bunch of about 10” strips x WOF. They are nice. They are not all exactly the same but I can certainly make squares or rectangles from them and work with what I have. I have 42 of these strips. Some of them are 60” wide!

Then, I have all these - these approximate half yards of fabric - and I have 25 of those!

It was really quite a bit.

The samples originated from Italy, and the USA - Atlanta.

These are the strips of fabric that are approximately 10” x WOF (width of fabric). Some are wider, some narrower. Some aren’t really the width of fabric. But what’s a person to do. There are 42 here!

I found that a bit ironic, actually. To go from Atlanta, GA, USA to our little town in Jozefow, to a friend in Otwock, who then passed them back to me, an American (who sews!) who lives in the area. I chuckled a bit.

Here are 25 approximate half yards.

So, while this means even more work for me to actually deal with, I’m delighted to get this given to me. For right now, these pieces are all still in my living room, but I’ll decide pretty soon whether to go ahead and just cut them up and deal with them NOW or put them in a pile somewhere and let a more convenient time show itself. I’m intrigued, actually, to try a quilt with rectangles of about 10x12” and do the half drop block effect. The only bad thing is that most of these seem to be dark denim. Mixing it up with some more light denim would make it a lot more interesting. Maybe I’ll look around and see if I can dig up some to mix in with it.

So there you are! I am working as hard as I can to deal with strips and scraps (report coming on March 31), but it appears that I am gifted it faster than I can deal with it all!

I’m really not complaining. I am blessed! I am eager to try out this denim. The only part of me that isn’t eager is my hand when I think of the cutting. Denim is heavy and most of this is 10 oz. or even heavier. In other words, it’s not a lightweight denim.

I wonder if I could make masks out of some of it. Just thinking….they might be kind of cool - denim masks - I have interfacing I could line them with it. People are here are starting to ask for them. However, even more are making them. I remain conflicted about making them.

And there you are! Stay safe. Stay healthy!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
