Cultural - Flowers from our yard!
When we first arrived in Poland one of the first type of flower I noticed while driving around Warsaw was the lowly dandelion. Now, I’m not sure why I didn’t think we’d have dandelions over here in Poland, but we do! Lots and lots of them. I was surprised. I guess I just figured they didn’t make their way to Europe. Whatever. I wasn’t really educated as to flora and fauna over here at the time!
This year, our March and April were very dry. But thankfully we’ve had SOME rain now in May. So grateful. So very, very thankful!
I thought it would be a good time to show you some of the flowers that I see as I walk around our yard.
First of all - the forget-me-nots. They grow very well here and I am grateful! For a while I had them in my flowerbed area - I had planted both blue and pink, but since then they have migrated all over the yard, and I’m very happy about that! They reseed themselves every year! They are the Alaska state flower, so seeing them bloom every spring makes me very, very happy.
Makes my husband happy as well!
Then, we also have little wild pansies - or viola - tricolor - I also LOVE them! Would love to have them all over the yard!
I brought some lily-of-the-valleys home from the church property- because I wanted some - they have spread and spread and I love it! I moved some to another part of the yard in fact so they can spread up along the back fence and up the hillside. Since they spread underground, they are not at all a problem to “grow”. They like the climate here.
Then we have various other wild flowers spread out through the yard. Most of them would be considered weeds but I took photos of them anyway!
“They say” that the difference between a weed and a wanted plant is that one you want to grow there and the other is not wanted. So grass in the middle of a flowerbed is considered a weed - in a yard, perfect.
Wildflowers in a wild pasture, are great, but where you are trying to grow grass, might be considered a pest!
I like them, so I let them grow wherever they want!
This one is a bulb I planted years ago now. It has spread and spread. The big green leaves you are seeing are actually a very invasive plant I can’t get rid of. It can grow faster than I can pick it out of the flowerbed. As a result, I’ve let it grow. I’ll see what happens eventually - but these flowers are doing pretty well in spite of the competition from the invasive plant.
These are very very small flowers. In fact, they are tiny…very close to the ground!
And there you are! Our flowers growing in the yard. I’ve actually have a few tulips as well, but they are about over by now so I left them out of the pictures!
