Quilted Twins

I ventured back out

Today I went back out and bought more batting. I should run out of the last roll when I sandwich the next three quilts (it was four) - so I wanted to make sure I got more today.

I told them I’d be back in 2 weeks for two more bolts—that way I am pretty sure they will have it. If I don’t warn them ahead of time, they might not have it and it puts pressure on them to go get me some quickly and I hate that.

It’s not a big trip - but they had other customers there, so I waited outside for a while and then when one of them left, I went in. I think I could have legally gone in, but the place is small and we would have been too crowded for comfort.

Then I got another 12 cans of spray glue - they cost almost as much as the 2 rolls of batting together! Hopefully I won’t need any more this year, though! :) I hope not anyway.

I also picked up another bright yellow spool of Polish thread - 1000 meters and some really cute tape/ribbon that says “handmade” on it. I’m thinking of putting it on my quilts - just not sure how at this point.

I did finally get my receipt for all the thread I bought last time - (I get it once a month from them with all my purchases on it for the whole month). The Polish thread (Ariadna) costs me $0.90 per 1000 meters and the German kind (Gutermann) $1.16 per spool of 1000 meters.

I have now sandwiched over 40 of the charity quilts and quilted over 30- so I am 1/4 done quilting and 1/3 finished sandwiching - which is wonderful. I have matched up tops to backings to another 15 quilts or so, so it is now seriously time to order some more backing so I don’t actually run out and hinder progress of sandwiching.

When I came home with my new batting, this is what I saw. His majesty, Tuq, decided he wanted a softer place to sleep.

Don’t worry - These aren’t finished yet and once I do finish them, I take pics and then remove them from my house - because I know the cats would love to get on them. once they are washed, if I leave them here in the house, I get a big sheet and cover them.

I wrote one company I’ve never ordered from before today and asked about two different fabrics.

If they don’t write back by tomorrow, I’ll just order another two or four fabrics from one of the older stand-by companies I’ve used before. Remember, when I order, I have to buy wholesale, which means 60-100 meters of EACH fabric, so I don’t really buy a whole lot of different ones at once since it represents a somewhat large “chunk of change” at once.

I really do need to get some solid red and royal blue as well. I’ve used up every scrap (exaggeration!) of royal blue solid I have and almost of all of ANY of my blue solids. My reds are diminishing fast and red is such a wonderful color for use with children’s charity quilts!

I’ll let you know what I do and what I end up buying.

The fabrics I am trying to buy are these - and I do want them, so I’m hoping that the company writes me back tomorrow. These are slated to be backings - for some of the small ones, but also the doubles I need to do. They use up fabric faster, obviously! I like using interesting fabrics for backings because the Polish people really like it.

This idea that the locals here check out what is on the back was reinforced on Sunday when I gave 3 quilts for boys away on Sunday to a young mom/couple who just moved here from the Ukraine. She checked out the backings on all three that she chose. In fact, in the picture that I took of them - they have 2 of the 3 quilts folded with the back side up. So who knows? Maybe she will use that side??

I certainly won’t ask!!! Would you?

Anyway…have a great day wherever you are reading this!
