A Special Quilt (top so far) for my Son-in-Law

This quilt top finishes at about 60”x75”.

I had brought back some Air Force fabric and other Americana fabric back last year with hopes of making a patriotic style quilt for my son-in-law (SIL). I’m kind of mulling over the idea of making a few QOV tops every year as they always need them in central FL! This is kind of testing the waters with this type of quilt.

My SIL just joined the Air Force in 2019, so I’m under no illusion that he actually has earned a Quilt of Valor.

But I made this for him.

The pattern is a free one by Henry Glass. You can get it here. It’s called I Spy.

Obviously I didn’t use the Henry Glass fabrics! I had some great vintage plane fabric - my husband assured me they are all Air Force planes - (VIP print from years ago since VIP isn’t in existence anymore) but the rest of the fabrics are pretty new.

It was quite easy to put together. These small quilts are all very quick and easy compared to the large queens I tend to make.

I did use a diagonal patriotic stripe for the border. I had a different fabric all cut out but decided it would just be “too much” for my own sensibilities. So I put that other choice away and decided to use this one.

You can get yours here.

The fabric that my sis has that I used is this one that is a green based featuring all the branches of the military.

I also used some white on white stars and an Air Force fabric - a blue one - but she’s out it. The yellowish gold and country blue used on the 4 patches - I just went to my stash to look for the colors I needed/wanted.

The red surrounding each block was a wood grain/boards design.

This top is 60”x75”.

And there you are! Here’s a simple quilt with good impact. I think it fits what I wanted to do perfectly. Can’t wait to show you what I’m doing on the back!

You’ll laugh. Or at least smile!

But that’s all for today. Thanks for coming along with me on my journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Stay safe!
