Quilted Twins

The Twin Project - part 3 - The "a" Quilt

“A” comes before “H”, right?

Yes it does.

Here’s the “a” quilt for my 5 year-old granddaughter, Adelyn.

I used that kind of wild-ish purple fabric because Adelyn actually brought it to her mom in the shop last summer and told her that she really liked it. I told Jessica, her mom, that I’d use some of it in the purple quilt I made her and brought back 1 1/2 yards with me to use.

(I will admit to wishing for a bit more. Isn’t that always the case? I would have made it play a bigger role in the quilt.)

I got right on the stick after finishing the top and quilted it with loops and hearts. I used some cotton batting I had here on hand because the cotton batting is better for Florida.

I’m not writing up a pattern for each of these quilts - but I will share how I did them.

I wanted them similar to each other, but I wanted them to finish at about 60”x 82” if possible. I know, a regular twin is longer than that, but while these girls are big, they aren’t that tall! Plus, they have bunk beds. I’ve seen how a regular twin size quilt doesn’t fit that well into a bunk bed. At the same time an 82” quilt will work for quite a while. In fact, here in Poland, it’s a little longer than everyone uses.

Here’s the layout. I made the squares using 2.5” pieces. The “a” grid is 11x14 so it is 22”x28” as a center panel of sorts.

As I mentioned in the last post about these, the whole alphabet can be found (at the time of this blog being published) here at this website. They are free downloads - and whereas the originals are rainbow colored, I wanted mine in a bargello 1 color - shades.

I added multiple borders to the center “a” as you can see which I cut these widths

They are numbered from the inside going ‘out’

  1. white - 2.5”

  2. purple - 2.5”

  3. lighter purple/lavender - 3.5”

  4. cat scene - 4.5”

  5. purple - graphic - 3.5”

  6. dark purple on sides - 5.5” and on top and bottom - 8.5”

  7. light strips for top and bottom - 2.5”

  8. outer dark strips on top of the light strips - 3.5”

I did struggle a bit with the wind.

Understatement.

Here’s the quilt roll:

I did go ahead and make her two pillowcases - so I have a whole set for her! I’m excited to give the girls pillowcases. I’ve not done that before.

I don’t know how long the girls will use these, but I did put the Paw Patrol fabric on the back. I had bought 6 yards of it - made two pillowcases and split the leftover in half. It wasn’t quite enough for a whole strip down the middle of the backing, so I split it with a strip of purple - in effect “stretching” it til it was long enough.

Here is how the backing looks.

The whole set looks like this!

And that’s it. Thanks for coming along on my journey with me!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Stay safe!
