UP Greens - #25 - Single Irish Chain top finished

I have had such a mess with these greens that I put most of them in their plastic boxes and took them to the dining room table and just have kept them out there - as soon as I got the Noble packages things out of the way. I am starting to feel a little bit like I am making some headway - finally!

Of course, even with this one folded up and put away for now - I am currently actively working on ANOTHER 3. :)

I’ve probably said that before with this project, but FINALLY. I am seeing my boxes go down now…fast. I might even work on seeing if I could squish it all into two large clear boxes - which is my goal. I do have two rather large zipper bags filled with pockets and labels - so I may have to make up something with those to make room. Without those, once I get my misc. pieces trimmed up, it would fit into two boxes - but then I still have a couple of bags of strips - specifically 1.5” and 2”.

Anyway…I started looking at my UP Blues series which is here -

Here is my UP Blues series in a single photo!

- as I was considering making a variation of one of those with my greens and I realized that with this greens series, I hadn’t actually made a simple Irish Chain quilt.

So, knowing what I had, I went ahead and designed this one and made it up.

This top is 94.5”x103.5”

These are so fast to make - and something about the simplicity - appeals to me.

If you didn’t realize it - the design is made by using simply a 9 patch and a plain square in an alternating layout.

Through out my quilting career, I’ve made several Irish Chain quilts - and of course, I’ve made quite a few variations of one - but I decided to keep this one simple for myself and leave it a single Irish Chain. I did decide to use the smaller pieces - so I used 2” strips instead of 2.5” strips. That makes for a bit more interest, IMO. I will admit, I am charmed also by an Irish Chain quilt made with 2.5” strips - commonly called Jelly Rolls. This one is a 19x21 layout - so I made 200 9 patch blocks plus the four corner blocks.

This whole series has helped me use up a lot of my upcycled whites as well - so I’m reaching the ‘dregs’ of those. LOL. That’s also very, very good! I’m not at all sad about that. I had had a large influx 2x of those in the last few years - both of which came from relatives who died and left their linens to their kids - and they made their way to me.

Here it is up close.

As you can tell, the greens I do have left are really not inspiring. That’s why I am getting excited that it’s getting close to being done. But then, with other things off my mind, I think I’m starting to get some more ideas! :) LOL Just in time to get truly to almost being done.

What happened is not long ago I went through my boxes of greens and sorted and really thought through all the small-ish pieces. Most of them ended up into a ‘cut-up’ box.

It’s what I’ve been using for these last few quilts - while hardly touching the almost two full boxes. I wanted to use up all the little scrappy pieces. You’ll see - the next three quilt tops are quite the variety of mostly smallish pieces.

And just as a summary - I know I just posted this yesterday - but here they are. From the beginning of the series.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Thanks for coming along with me on my quilting/sewing journey!
