Another update on mom - July 21, 2021
It’s been 16 days now.
Mom was admitted into the hospital on April 8, 2021 after having been sick with COVID for a couple of weeks. She walked in by herself and carried on coherent conversations. She came out of the hospital on April 29, 2021 in a terrible condition - a person who couldn’t hold herself up in a sitting position (much less walk out of the hospital) and called me, her daughter, “mama”.
Today she is walking (with a walker), is currently watching a baseball game (at the moment of this writing), reading, writing her own checks for her own bills, reading her mail, and asking my brother and me to do various things that might need to be done if they seem a bit too much for her to do.
She is going to the bathroom on her own in her own toilet without additional seating or help. She is dressing herself as well. The only thing she needs help with is socks. She can’t get her socks on her toes.
I had her drive her own van a couple of weeks ago (out on the road) just to make sure she could - and she did fine. I’ll try to do it again with her this week. Getting in the van is the hard part.
She plays the piano 20-30 minutes a day, works crosswords, likes watching baseball and a few documentaries on tv and news to a limited extent.
She is doing exercises daily - from legs/walking to arms and core body exercises. Each day she gets tired out doing them. Then she rests.
She does have a bed sore on the back of her left heel. Her left leg was like a dead weight which she could hardly raise when she arrived home in late April. During that initial two weeks home from the hospital she developed a black spot on that ‘dead’ leg which developed into a bad sore/ulcer which was 1” across. It is now healing. It has not healed over completely, but is coming alone fine. Each day I’m changing the bandage, exposing it to air and soaking in Epsom salts as needed. I’m praying it heals up soon. It was a pretty deep sore, though, by the time the doctor pulled off the scab a few weeks ago now.
So…THANK YOU so much for praying and asking and caring. We are all grateful to all of you who have been so supportive.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Stay safe!
Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store here!
Here’s one of the beauties we have!
