Quilted Twins

"Checkered" progress

Here we are - the next update on this top that is amazing but somewhat slow to put together!

I make 16 patches that are so cute - they are adorable! I just have to make a lot of them. Each of the next rows take an extra 2 blocks. These last few rows took 11, 13, and 15 blocks.

I decided to work this way this time. I actually sewed strips together for 2 hours. I’m not counting cutting strips time since I am doing that downstairs at the big table as I cut other things or feel like cutting up for a few minutes at a time.

Then, after I sewed strips together for an hour, I pressed, then I subcut little units of 4 blocks. Then I did that again (on two different days). Then I sewed those together until I had enough blocks to make at least 2 rows. But as I looked at what I wanted to do this time, I thought, “Becky, let’s add 3 rows to this top this time.” So I did.

The top now measures 44” across and 44” down. Of course, it isn’t anything like that big yet in reality as I’m working “on point”, but that is the width and the length.

I printed out a sheet I’m showing you below and wrote on the side the number of blocks I need to make that row. That way I can then mark off where I am on the quilt. It also lets me know how many blocks I need to add another row. As I’ve mentioned before, I could make a zillion blocks and put the top together all at once, but with this top, I’m not doing it that way. I want to watch it grow from time to time.

This is the layout I use. If you want to make a quilt the same size, just print this out and then cross it off as you go. It will help keep you up with where you are.

From now on, adding more than one row at a time will involve significant work. Because of that fact, I will try to give it a few minutes every day or two so that I can make up a lot more of these little 16 patch blocks.

I add the blocks and then trim off the extra which I’m throwing into my crumbs bag to be given to Ewa to let her play with.

Here is where we are now. This top so far - is here.

Because there are so many little pieces involved in making this top, I am keeping everything in this plastic bin. I have zipper bags with various pieces in stages of construction in it. I also am putting the partially made top in it. Eventually I expect it to take up more and more space in the box until it is a significant part of what’s in the box!

In this plastic bin I have my 1.5” strips to be sewn together, my strips that are sewn together into 2’s, my little 4x strips and a few extra blocks. I am also keeping the partially finished top in the box. it is folded up on top and to the right in this photo.

Since there isn’t a new top here - just an increase in size - I didn’t give you an update on the whole series. If you are new here, just go back a couple days ago and check out the series at the bottom of the last post.

Don’t be fooled. There’s a lot of work already involved in this top. However, it is starting to look super nice. And when things start to look like this, it inspires me to work harder on something! I guess I do need to pick up the pace if I am going to finish this top before I finish the whole series.

And just to remind you of what this is going to look like - let me show you the Upcycled Blues one in all its glory. it’s truly an amazing quilt. Possibly it’s one that only another quilter can truly appreciate.

Simple? Sure.

But I really like it. It’s heavy too, as you can imagine with all those seams.

Thanks for coming along on this journey with me!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Stay safe!
