Mistakes - what do you do?
Oh my. I spent the day working feverishly on my next UP greens quilt blocks.
They are 9 patch blocks and 7 of the 9 ‘patches’ are pieced. So, you can imagine I’ve been busy.
Then, in the evening I put some of them out on the floor and I realized that I had made a mistake in the piecing.
One little patch on every block was the wrong color. It was dark and it should be light. I don’t want to show you yet - it would be a spoiler.
Grrr.
What to do?
Well, what can one do when there is a mistake?
There are several options.
Leave it - consider it a design change.
Fix it. Go back and change all the blocks until they are right.
Do a work around. Change the design using the blocks that you did make.
In my case, I have to fix each block - and I have 100 of them! Why fix them? Because I don’t like how it looks without them fixed and I will never like it without them fixed. I have already spent enough time on these blocks, what’s another couple of hours fixing them?
Oh, I know, I’ve heard the saying, “If you can’t see the mistake from a galloping horse, it’s fine,” or “The Amish put a mistake in each quilt on purpose (obviously not true, because a mistake is something done accidentally - because if it is on purpose, it’s not a mistake - it’s planned!) as a reminder that no one is perfect.” I already know I’m not perfect. No problem there. I just don’t want to leave something wrong when I know about it right now in this stage of construction.
One time I was listening to Angela Walters and she said she got to Quilt Market with a quilt and was looking at it and realized she had left a whole section unquilted! That made me smile and feel better knowing that someone who makes her living teaching quilting (and selling machines) made such a mistake - just a display of humanity, actually!
So…tell me, what’s the biggest mistake you’ve made on a quilt that you “left” as it was and didn’t fix? Was it in the piecing or quilting?
Sorry this is so short - just that this is very relevant right now. Hope to show you the new top on Monday!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Stay safe!
