Cultural: Trip to Southern Poland - part 2 - Checking out the Gliding School
Besides the short train ride into the middle of the forest where logging had been happening in days gone by, we went to a place where they have a gliding school - flying gliders - that means - where PEOPLE fly in gliders - not something remote control!
My biggest fear of putting this here is that there you won’t really see the gliders as everything was from a long distance. Because of that, the glider is hard to see.
As we drove up, we saw this little unassuming sign (shown above). Then, off in the distance was a trailer - it looked long. It was what they pull the glider in when they brought it to this spot.
What we did see after got out of the car was a tractor and a big view overlooking the valley.
The tractor had a line attached to it. When we first got there, I was just checking out the scenery but eventually became aware that the tractor was going to start. What happened was that the tractor began pulling the line that was attached to the glider which was at the bottom of the hill.
As the tractor began tightening the line, it pulled on the glider. As it was pulled up the hill, the glider went airborne.
When it got to a certain height, they let the line “go” and the glider went on its way around and around a time or two until it came back to the grass and landed, where they attached it to the glider again. I think it took about 10-15 minutes of gliding around til it came around and landed. At that point, they reattached the line, and then redid the take-off.
As we walked over to where the hillside overlook was, it was gorgeous. The hills (mountains) definitely were there - and reminded me very much of the Appalachian Mountains.
Click on this video to see a glider take off. I did the best I could with this video! At about 24 seconds in, they release the rope that they used to pull them into the air with and you can possibly see it fall to the ground. Later a vehicle goes to where the rope is and takes it back down to the starting spot and they do it all over again.
A little closer up -
Here is an overview of the beautiful valley!
These really give you an idea of the hilly section of the Polish mountains - Bieszczady. Poland has quite a few mountain regions in the southern section of the country - this is only one of them.
We actually went to a little coffee/sweets shop and had some hot tea and sweets. I thought these cookies were pretty.
And that’s what we saw. Lots of pretty hills and greenery and yellow leaves.
Then we went back to the house where we were staying!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Thanks for coming along with me on my quilting/sewing journey!
Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store here!
Here’s one of the beauties we have!
