A Bit of This and That - Winding Down the Charity Quilts

Today was one of those days where I was just trying to finish up all the charity quilt washing and trying to get most of them dried and photographed.

I knew it is supposed to rain tomorrow (the day you are reading this), so I wanted to get as many photographed as possible on Monday as the ground will be wet. These quilts kind of just touch the ground. When it’s dry, it’s not a big deal, but when it’s been raining, it can get the quilt dirty.

I also got word that I had a box at the post office, so I went and got it.

It’s not always very fast to get in and out of the post office. The very cool thing about that is that I got word via Messenger from a postal worker!

I feel very special.

The box is from Fran. I’ve not opened it yet but it has tops in it. They have started charging us to receive boxes from the states now. It’s kind of frustrating, actually. It’s not a lot - under $3, but it’s the principle of the thing! Why should I have to pay anything when it’s is a gift? (It’s because the gov’t needs $$.)

I began to pick up in the dining room so I could get it all cleared out as soon as I can get all these quilts out of here. I haven’t been able to do that quite yet - I have 5 left to photograph.

These stages are all a little slower than I had hoped, but that’s how it goes when you work with bigger quilts. Smaller ones are faster in every way - they wash faster, and they seem to dry faster. They are even faster to fold! I can drape more around in various places if they are small.

I did buy a special cleaning machine that will help me get the floor a bit more clean than I can do easily by hand with a mop. I have a hard time here because they don’t have the regular mops with scrubby sponges on them here. Or if they do, they don’t tend to carry that brand very long, so you can’t buy the refill mop heads because they are no longer available. In the last few years, however, I’ve not seen them anywhere.

That means that the mop we have is a string mop - and I don’t really find them easy to actually get dirty/sticky stuff off the floor. Overspray is sticky and results in a dirty floor. I had hoped to have the dining room cleared out today when the Bissell electric mop arrived.

The mop arrived.

overspray - it’s a real thing

I didn’t get the dining area floor all cleaned out yet.

So that’s pushed forward.

I did spend a while fixing chili for lunch and then cleaning up afterwards. The huge pot of chili will feed us for several days.

Otherwise, I had to monitor the washing machine and try to pick up a bit. I can’t wait to get back to the sewing machine but I’m trying to completely finish up this project for 2021 so I can consider it done until the Give-away - which is really the culmination!

I’ve penned the Give-Away in for November 6. I had wanted it to be October, but I’m running behind what I had originally hoped.

My husband transplanted these red oaks to our yard several years ago now. I love them!

So, I spent quite a while taking photos today - moving some quilts to the vehicle, trying to encourage quilts to dry, and taking care of mail and getting some needed computer work done.

winding down

It felt like a let-down of a day - but as this winds down, it’s fine. I can use a little bit less pressure. I find myself often getting sick shortly after a big project or huge task is over. I really don’t want that—not by simply making quilts! I will say, however, that these 52+ large quilts felt more like 100 - it really was a lot more work to make big ones than small ones! So, all in all, the 125 charity quilts have felt more like almost 200 - even though I actually didn’t make most of the tops!!!!!!!!!

Anyway…it’s been that kind of a day. The days are getting shorter and chillier here. Today we had a high of about 53F, so while I put a few quilts on the line, they didn’t dry completely in a couple of hours. That meant I brought quilts back in the house that needed to finish drying inside the house. I should be able to take all the rest of the quilts to the building tomorrow and take more photos inside.

I won’t show them all to you now - but will continue to show 10 at a time.

And that’s it.

I’m trying to stay healthy, get this project put away and go on to the “creative part” of the rest of the year’s quilting and piecing!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Thanks for coming along with me on my quilting/sewing journey!
