"Checkered" - Up Greens #8
I suppose it was inevitable, wasn’t it? I really needed to get this one finished. All the way finished.
I had worked on it for many months - which you realize if you read here in 2021 and earlier this year.
He kind of made it hard for me to work. I kept having to move him.
When I quilted this, I sewed every other row first, both directions, and then went back and filled in between the other undone lines. (On the first sewing - I started in the middle and worked to the sides, but once I had one direction done, every other row, I just started at the edge and worked in - as the quilt was sufficiently stabilized and nothing was going to go anywhere.)
I quilted it exactly the same way I made the blue one. I liked it and it was actually quite easy albeit slow and tedious. I did finish the quilting in one day, however. That’s quite a contrast to how long it took to make this quilt!
It weighs 6.83 lbs - using poly batting. I debated using cotton batting, but decided it was heavy enough without adding the weight of that batting. Poly batting is quite a bit lighter than cotton.
It really added a lot of nice texture to this quilt top. So fun!
Draped over the table.
To make it easier for you - I did write up a basic pattern - which can be found here. I did also give reports from time to time on the blog. You can just search for Checkered on the blog part of the website. Here.
Hanging outside in the front yard. This is morning. I try to get the pictures before the sun comes in from behind the quilt - which is much easier in the winter than the summer when our sun is coming up at about 3:30 am.
I made a back once again out of second-hand fabrics. All of these will have backings made from second-hand fabrics.
The quilting is so simple and took several hours - maybe about 6 or 7 of focused quilting.
I did finish it in one day - using my Janome 8900. I bound it after I finished quilting, and then washed it in the early evening and draped it over the table for the night. I then hung it out after breakfast the next morning to let it finish drying and got photos shortly after hanging it up. I left it up all day.
It’s been a while since I’ve left one up on the line. My husband and I were talking - and we wonder if the neighbors wondered if I’ve been sick as it’s been so long since I had a quilt out there for any time.
While the design of this quilt is rather, shall I say, unexciting, and less than a car-stopper - as it hangs on the line - up close and personal, it’s mighty fine.
That’s why I’m showing you so many up close photos! I mean, it’s actually rather boring with no subtlety about it - not one iota. Well, I did use whites, off whites and creams - I suppose that is the only thing subtle about the design.
Each of these squares finishes at 1”. Yes, there are a lot of squares in this one! No, I really don’t know how many. I think I did figure it out for my blues one that I made which is similar, but I didn’t for this one. I just don’t care enough to check. All I know - it’s a lot.
And there you are - Checkered - finally ALL FINISHED! I can hear the “hallelujahs” from some of you!
Thanks so much for reading. Have a great day wherever you are!
One more glimpse at the series so far - as I get them done I will continue to show them in this form as maybe a straight up shot changes the look of the tops a bit at times.
Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store here!
Here’s one of the beauties we have!
