Quilted Twins

"Sweetness and Light" - Up Greens #29 top finished

As you know - I’ve made two versions of Sweetness and Light - the first one I made was from some shirts that a lady was giving away on our Freecycle group.

I made the quilt from her shirts and gave her back the quilt.

Now I’m not sure that she actually wanted such a quilt. I am not positive if I had the chance to do it again, if I would. :) Anyway, her quilt looked like this and I truly loved it. I hope she did.

The second time I made this was this past November for our local charity for sick children from our town. This is that one. This one, like the first one, was made from second hand shirts I got from a lady who lives not too far from me. I did add a couple of other shirts in order to have enough variety of plaids.

The pattern for this quilt is here.

Neither of these first two were large. Both of them I gave away.

I decided to make yet another one - but this time - BIG. Yes, I made one for this Upcycled Greens series.

And here it is.

This particular version is about 93”x102” - it’s on point with a few borders which are green, white and then a piano key border which helped me use up a lot of misc. (and ugly!) pieces of these greens.

I did not rewrite the pattern for you. You can just add more rows to the pattern as it is written to make it larger. Here it is with the layout I used for this green one. Feel free to right click on the photo and save it - that way you can work from it. I tend to print mine out and place it in front of my machine so I can watch it and also cross off the rows as I make them.

When I made this, I made the rows a few at a time and then sewed them together. I tried to make it so that no two identical pieces of fabric were right next to each other.

And just to show you how truly uninspiring the fabrics in this top are - here is a sample piece from the border up close.

It fascinates me how a combination of such totally uninteresting to me pieces of fabric can somehow combine to make something I like. I can’t wait to quilt this one - I think I’ll get right on it!

Here is the series so far - just in case you are new. This collection of quilts is made from these fabrics which are shirts, tops, blouses, curtains, dresses, and duvet covers.

One my goals in these series (this one and UP Blues) it to make a variety of styles and “feelings” to the quilts. I don’t necessarily think like a modern quilter, so making something with a distinctly modern flair probably isn’t going to happen, but I’m trying to not get stuck into one “look”. I know that the longer I quilt, the more I may develop my own particular “style” or look - but I’m trying to make myself do a variety of looks. I know what I have a tendency to do and fight it a bit when I sit down to work on the Electric Quilt program.

However, with these particular tops, I have been driven primarily by “what I have”. I probably have at least 5 more designed but I won’t make them because I simply do not have the greens to make them.

Obviously I can make them - but not with UP greens and not part of this series. :)

Thanks for coming along on my journey with me - I trust you have a great day wherever you are!
