As seen in Lidl - help for Ukraine - you can give to the people who need it - Cosmetics and cleaning supplies, food and cleaning things for children, blankets, towels, bedding, pillows, clothing, underwear, dry goods such as rice, grains, pasta, packed baked goods, instant soups, preserves and jarred items, sweets, water and juices, drinks, coffee, tea, sugar, oil
Our County fair uses the Danish system of judging. Every entry receives a ribbon based on its own merit. So, each item will earn either a blue, red or yellow ribbon based on the standards listed in the rules.
From the blue ribbons, the judges will then choose the Grand Champions and the Reserve Grand Champions within each division.
The Pasco County Fair Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and Special Award winners for 2022 from the Collura Cottage are as follows:
Vera Cox Quilting Award:
Pat Neville of Land o’Lakes for her Applique quilt
Pat Neville said that she learned a lot of new techniques during the process of making this beautiful quilt.
Joe Collura Award: Most unusual item:
Sharon Morris of Dade City for her 3 piece Flamingo Painted Gourds:
Sharon Morris made these beautiful pink flamingos out of gourds. She’s an artist and thinks quite creatively.
Dept 1 – Heirloom Arts
Division—Needlework:
Grand Champion: Luz Perez of Zephyrhills, – Crocheted tan/off-white afghan/tablecloth
Reserve Grand Champion: Bobbie Gilpin of Dade City -Crocheted Afghan
Bobbie Gilpin crocheted this beautiful afghan using a different stitch with each color.
Division—Embroidery:
Grand Champion: Sue Blank – Hand embroidered Counted Cross Stitch
Sue said that this cross-stitch took hundreds of hours to create. She worked on it 5 hours a day for many months. The result was a beautiful creation, which stunned anyone who did hand embroidery.
Reserve Grand Champion: Nancy Charles, Machine Embroidered wallhanging
Nancy Charles won second place in the embroidery division for this stunning machine embroidered wall hanging.
Division—Quilts of All Sizes
Grand Champion: Charlotte Kent of Dade City for her stunning Judy Neimeyer quilt.
Charlotte said that this gorgeous Judy Neimeyer quilt took over 500 hours to create, with over $500 in the fabrics alone.
Reserve Grand Champion: Brenda Theisen for her amazing Jacquelyn DeJong quilt called Aurora
Brenda said that she loves doing Jacquelyn DeJong quilts and that this went together fairly quickly — working on it every day for 2 or 3 months, 10 hours per day :)
Division—Quilted Items
Grand Champion: Marlene Couglar of Zephyrhills, for her quilted ultimate travel bag
This ultimate travel bag was made by Marlene Couglar of Zephyrhills. She took the class from Julie Harris, shown below.
Reserve Grand Champion: Julie Harris of Spring Hill, for her quilted ultimate travel bag
Julie Harris is one of our teachers in the store, and she made the Ultimate travel bag shown above with the red rosette on it, for her class as a model.
Division—Sewing
Grand Champion: Fran Marquette of Zephryhills for Raggedy Ann and Andy
Fran said that she had started this quite a few years ago, and finalliy finished it early this year! I’m so thankful as this was one of the entries that brought back the most memories for people.
Reserve Grand Champion: Diane Howton of Zephyrhills for Christmas Gnome #1
Diane Howton made a pair of these gnomes,but she entered them separately. This one was beautiful and tok second place in sewing.
Dept 2 – Home Arts
Division—Baked Goods
Grand Champion: Petra Zamora of San Antonio for her Carrot Cake
Petra said that everyone loves her carrot cake. I must say that the judges would not stop raving about this, either! They loved it.
Reserve Grand Champion: Stacie Young of Zephyrhills for her delicious cookies.
These cookies were amazing, according to the judges.
Division—Canning/Preserving
Grand Champion: Jennifer Brennan of Dade City, for her Canned Collards
The judges could NOT stop talking about how much they loved Jennifer’s canned collards. She was happy to report that most people who taste them do so very much love them.
Reserve Grand Champion: Barbara Pesola of Wesley Chapel for her pickled beets
Pickled beets were one of Barbara’s specialties.
Division—Table Theme Settings
Grand Champion: Donna Blommel of Dade City for her table interpretation using Four Seasons
The judges had never judged a table setting before and they enjoyed her creative license that she used with the plaid centerpiece and the table cloth.
Dept. 3 – Arts/Crafts
Division—Hobby Arts
Grand Champion: Diane Thacker of Zephyrhills for her Woven Nantucket Basket
Diane said that her Nantucket basket, shown with the blue rosette ribbon, took about 40 hours to make over a period of weeks.
Reserve Grand Champion: Nancy Colket of Wesley Chapel for her pine needle basket
Division—Creative Arts
Grand Champion: St. Leo student, Heidi Konow of Dade City, for her 4 doll set
Heidi is a college student who loves creating things. She said it took about a day per doll. Each doll represents a season.
Reserve Grand Champion: Dorothy McClelland of Zephyrhills for her hand made necklace
Dorothy said that each piece of the jeweled necklace had to be formed with a stone and wire. Then it was put together into one amazing masterpiece. The judges were amazed at her craftsmanship and overall skill at creating wearable art.
Wow. Aren’t those pretty - so creative! So fun!

And…if you are in Pasco County, FL (you need an address there at least) consider making things during this year to put in the fair next year. It’s part of our small-town Americana that many of us love! Let’s not lose it- let’s fill up that cottage with entries! All kinds!!! Do you have a favorite here? It’s hard - because you are comparing apples to pumpkins sometimes. But I admit to a special love of that Raggedy Ann and Andy pair. Love them! What about you? Oh well - those paper pieced quilts - they are ‘beyond great’! And those purses/totes..and those… well, you get the picture. Oh..and those cute flamingos!!!
