The Latest ... from Poland with regards to Ukrainian Refugees

This last week has been crazy. It’s been a very long week.

Shipments to Ukraine - We had two. My husband went on Monday and Friday to Ukraine and delivered goods inside the border.

First of all, on Monday my husband ended up going to Ukraine because the driver that he had thought he had didn’t work out.

So, he ended up going to Ukraine with this stuff. They got back about midnight. Driving to and crossing the borders takes about 4 hours. It then takes time to transfer the stuff from one vehicle to the other.

I sent a lot of duvet and duvet covers to them because this particular place is a camp and houses many people - refugees. They need bedding.

At that point, our friends who are visiting here from the states wanted to send relatives in Ukraine a shipment. So Luda and I began to shop. I also ordered on line - a lot - on Monday evening. I tried to have things shipped the fastest possible way. So then the next couple of days Luda and I shopped and shopped.

On Friday, Mike (my husband), Tim, and Luda (guests from the USA - while Luda’s family is in Ukraine) - all went to Ukraine to deliver a truck and trailer load to Luda’s Brother in Law who would then take it 8 hours farther. Here are pictures that show the collecting of stuff, plus the loading which took place on Thurs. evening/Friday morning. After it was mostly loaded, they then sent me out to get more stuff (Thurs. afternoon). I then picked up more sugar/flour/peas/corn. Then I told them I had done enough shopping for the time being.

They left on their trip on Friday late morning and got back about 10 pm.

It was about 3 tons of supplies.

Safely back with this large trailer!

One of the things Luda’s sisters said they needed there was seeds. Well, we took them seriously and probably provided enough for all the area families.

Here’s a short video of what the trailer looked like a little more “up close”.

Then, we also took food to a the local place that houses women and children. They specifically asked for breakfast and supper foods which included sliced meat like ham, cheese, spreadable cheeses, and tomatoes. I went two times with food. Both times I had help. :) Lena herself is a refugee (the blond lady)…who just wants to help.

I also spent some time finishing up some charity quilts and Luda and I made up 10 more bags - charity quilt, blanket, pillow, pillowcase, towel and flat sheet.

We spent a lot of time shopping for that trip to Ukraine to Luda’s family (they would distribute) which included food, personal hygiene items and even things like adult diapers and Tim bought some things with the men in mind.

This delivery which happened a week ago was mostly tarps - heavy duty ones. Going to help those who have lost parts of houses or roofs.

I also provided a few things to a couple of people who needed things. One was a man with his wife and children who needed some cooking utensils and pots and pans and slippers.

This past week we also took a few things to the school where they sort things and provide for various ladies and children who are coming through. I gave them 5 more sets of bedding.

I also decided to just start buying big amounts of things like baking soda, powder, yeast which would then allow the people on the other end (Ukraine) to just split it up themselves. It is so much cheaper when you buy them by the kilo (2.2 lbs is one kilogram) than by individual packages. Maybe next report I can show you the difference in price.

Here is a 25 kg bag of baking soda! 25kg = 55 lbs. (approx)

We also met with the firemen and received (and paid for) 8 of the medical bags featured on Saturday’s blog post.

Other things we did was help a lady get into an apartment, get her daughter a bed in the form of a sofa/bed, and on Saturday we also got a bunch of ‘things’ from a lady - we will get to find homes for these things. As of this writing, much of this stuff is at our house.

I also had some help putting some uncontained duvets into covers - and the ladies also put duvet cover sets with them - at least as many as I had. These will either go to the local place that needs that houses women or we will send them on the next trailer load to Ukraine.

The idea I have for the quilts you send is to put them in a bag like these bags and put the size on the front of each bag. That will protect them in transit as they will go to various places and give the size so people can see it AND the design.

In the photo, from left to right - Lena (a refugee), Rebekah - an American missionary who left Ukraine to come to Poland to help Ukraine during this time, Luda - a Ukrainian/American visiting us at this time, and Albina - a refugee - also staying at the church building.

The week has been very busy. It has felt like a very, very long week - packed to the gills. We are so grateful to be able to help various individuals and organizations both here in Poland and in Ukraine with the humanitarian crisis that currently exists here.

Thank you so much for your part!

if you do want to help, you can donate here. All proceeds go to helping those affected by the war. We are almost daily learning of new needs and/or opportunities to help. Clicking on this link, will take you to the page where you can give.

If you want to give quilts, Rachael is running a quilt drive because we’ve been offered a good deal on shipping with the help of Scott Fortunoff of Jaftex Fabrics (Henry Glass, studio E, Free Spirit, Ae Nathan, Blank Quilting, 3 Wishes, etc.). If you want to know more about that, read here.

Thank you again for all who have helped - even if only encouragement. We need it. :)
