Here is another one of those unfinished objects that I recently found - with nature fabrics. I had 18 of these blocks, but obviously I had planned to make 20 blocks as the red wood plank fabrics borders were already cut. These 3” squares were cut as I was cutting down fabrics into strips but as I came across these types of fabrics, if there was room, I went ahead and made these squares from them.

I made one other one out of this fabric - here. I called this one Corralling the Scraps. I still like it.

I think when I made this one shown on the right, I still had some squares leftover, so I decided to make these other blocks using those 3” squares.

I ended up giving the one called Corralling the Scraps away - which I STILL like - a lot.

But I needed this one to be different. However, with this really nice wood planks fabric as the border of the block, I wanted to keep the actual layout pretty simple. This one isn’t about the layout per say, but rather, the fabrics inside those blocks.

As I took pictures of it, it would be super nice as an “I Spy” quilt of nature fabrics. For example, you could say, “Find the nose of a horse”, or the “Front leg of a horse” or a “wolf” or “mountains” or whatever.

I made the next two blocks - I had scrounged around and found a few 3” squares of nature themed fabrics, but didn’t have 32 like I needed. So, I did go cut some more from several different fabrics - just so I could finish up this quilt top. I mean, seriously - enough’s enough. This one is close enough to be doing that finishing it to “top status” should not be a huge deal.

I believe when I originally had this one planned, I wanted to make it for Mike’s brother and his wife. However, since then, I’ve changed my mind, and I want to keep it for our own - to go on our bed when we need extra warmth. Sometimes in the winter we use several on our bed and I know my husband loves these colors.

As I finished it with brown and an extra red border, it ended up being about 79”x95” - so plenty big enough to go on top of our other quilts to add extra warmth.

Once again - I do like the fabrics and the colors. I think having a plan for this one helped me get excited about finishing it.

I will admit that the hardest thing about this layout was figuring out what to do with the cornerstones. I had a different plan - that also would have been nice, but I was afraid that if I hadn’t had the right shade, it wouldn’t have worked quite right. I’ll show you what I was debating.

I was afraid if I didn’t have quite the right shading on the second layout, then I thought it wouldn’t have the look I was going after. So I defaulted to the first one with the 9 patches and the red centers. The red centers also brought that deep red into the top one more time.

So now you now,. One of my latest projects - with MOST of the blocks already done - and once again - it was just put away. Obviously I got doing something else and it was just sitting there in the back of my mind and the room. It’s one I’d never quite forgotten about and it’s great to have the top finished and moved on down to my longarm room where I can take it to the next step.
