Quilted Twins

"Walkabout" finished

We ended up having a couple of dry-ish days in a row so I was able to get photos. Then, sure enough while I was trying to get some photographs, it started dripping on me!

Anyway- this one is in my 2.5” strips series of quilts. It is another version of this quilt which I made a while ago now. What I mean is that I shrunk up the dimensions and went with this look.

I showed this quilt top a while ago and told you then that I wished I had made my sashing blocks wider. That remains to this day, but I’m not angry at myself for making the sashing the same size as the white in the blocks. However, I really do like the idea with a bit more space in between the blocks - just to have some room to enjoy the individual blocks. It’s a rather large block - at 20”!

Note - I will say that as I look at the photos of the finished quilt - I am actually far more pleased with the final look in the photos than I realized by looking at the quilt without the photos.

But I was so happy that the wind died down and I was able to get some nice shots. It’s not a very complicated or sophisticated quilt, but I was able to use up a lot of pastel 2.5” squares and strips. I really like my line for photographing when they can hang nice and straight. It lets us all see how they are really supposed to look- the design shows off as well as possible.

Here are some close ups:

And then if you step back a bit -

I did go through my strips and chose out hot pinks, darkish blues and aquas and dark yellows, etc. In other words, these are pastels, but definitely not light or pale ones. I needed to choose my darker ones so that the design would show up.

I definitely made a scrappy pastel binding. While I’ve definitely used a lot of scrappy bindings, I may do even more in the future than I have. I have about 8 quilts waiting to be bound and have been considering what colors to use. I will tackle each one individually.

Needless to say that I am thrilled to finish yet another one of the 2.5” tops! I can show you the series to date. I’ll do that just after the quilt roll.

The free pattern is right here.

It is basically just the very large block with sashing strips. Really quite easy. This would make a great design also with the burgundies and browns along with a cream as sashing.

Each one of these blocks uses 72 individual 2.5” squares. Naturally I didn’t mostly do it that way, but if you have some special fabrics and wanted to use them (think Kaffe Fassett Collection) it would work well to feature those special squares as well! I do tend to use strip piecing when I can and supplementing with individual squares when needed.

Anyway - back to the 2.5” strips series of tops that I’m making and have already shown you.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
