"Country Roads"
This one is #24 in the Upcycled Greens series. I decided on the name Country Roads - absolutely no reason why except for the florals and the checkered centers in the blocks. To me, a gingham print makes me think of country, warm, homey, and simple living. The florals add to that with a big variety of these prints surrounding the checkered centers.
At this point in the series I wasn’t sure how many more I was going to do. Somehow these series seem to drag on far longer than I ever think they will.
The fabrics that I used or wanted to use with this one were all so busy that I just decided that I had to calm it down by some using the same fabric in the centers and then using a light blue as sashing. This helped with a sort of cohesion to the quilt in spite of the many florals that I used for the main part of the blocks.
This one is a pleasant surprise to me. As I’ve watched it dry on my dining room table, I’ve grown to appreciate it more than when I first made it. Now that it is finished, I’m actually quite happy with it.
The coloration is quiet and wild at the same time. Mostly quiet. It’s interesting and realizing what I had to work with, I’m actually ultra pleased. I would probably give this one a 6+/10 which is better than I feared it would be when I first made it. I had so many very busy florals that I was so afraid I couldn’t make any of it cohesive.
It’s such a simple design - really, really simple. It is hard to know even what to say about it. The cornerstones were a bit darker just to add a little bit of zing to the light blue sashing.
The block has the checkerboard fabric in the middle of each block. As I said, I did that so that it would somehow help create a unified top with a whole lot of various floral fabrics.
The back is all second-hand fabrics, as usual.
The quilt roll:
I did a lot of swirls again on this one.
Here are some closeups of the quilting. I still need to improve, naturally. I am getting better with each quilt.
The pattern for this quilt is here. I hope some of you can enjoy it!
Here is the Upcycled Greens series to date.
