June Garden Report

I think I will just do these once a month. I know many of you are not gardeners….and thus these aren’t all that interesting to you.

So what have I done?

On May 3 we planted peas. This is what they look like now.

I’m already behind on the weeds in between the rows!

Earlier in April I sowed some seeds in potting soil - in other words, I started a lot of plants.

I did get them all transplanted into the ground. Now I have no plants sitting around in little pots. Everything either went into big pots or directly into the soil.

We got 3 twin rows of corn planted. Under each row of plastic, I put a watering hose so I don’t have to run a sprinkler in the air this year - to reduce water loss and to just make watering better for the corn. I’m hoping for a better harvest as a result.

I decided that these rows are so long (50 ft) for just the two of us that we planted only half of the corn on May 31. In two weeks we will plant the other half - but we put the plastic and hose in position in May. The rest I’d like to plant by the end of this week.

This is the first time we have ever done such a thing. I’m hoping for a better germination rate.

Here is how the corn looks now. It is starting to poke out of the plastic.

I planted some beans to go along the fence— They are long and skinny (12”) - totally just for fun though they are edible. We’ll see how they do.

They are just now starting to come up.

On June 13 these bean plants were popping out of the ground!

I have various kinds of pumpkins - from big ones to small baby pumpkins - both white and yellow/orange. I planted more orange this year as last year I had too many green and special ones and not enough ordinary ones! I probably have too many plants!

I also have zucchini and yellow squash. I brought the small crookneck squash seed from the states as I really do love squash casserole! I’ve never seen them here, believe it or not!

A few days later

So, I think I’m tired. Getting seeds sown and plants put into the ground is a big part of everything. Our weather has been so up and down - so cool and hot that it is hard to know how to plant or when to plant.

I do have several groups of tomatoes.

Some in pots like this:

Some in containers of 3 like these:

Some in the ground up by the peas:

I have about 6 of these plants - they are hot cherry peppers.

I got all my flowers planted by the first week of June. I had a goal of the last week of May, but didn’t quite make it.

We have this rose plant growing like wildfire. I’ve ignored it and it has done well. I can’t even remember when we planted it.

Right at the end of May I put these begonias in this round concrete ring.

Shortly after planting

I don’t know if these begonias will spread enough to fill this ring, but that would be soo cool!

So there you go. I have been very busy doing this kind of thing! Since we’re experiencing a drought - I’m having to water a lot.

One more fun thing I got - a solar powered fountain. Naturally that means that it won’t work all the time, but today - it’s overcast as we’re actually having a rainy day (1/32 of an inch!) but my solar fountain is working, albeit a little on the blurpy side. The fact that it is pumping anything is amazing on such an overcast day.

Little successes.

So there you are! The first garden post. I expect that the next post, about a month from now will show some major growth. At least I hope so!

So now you know at least some of the other things going on in my life right now!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading!
