The Garden Begins!
This summer I hope to be able to give the garden the time it needs to be a good one. Last summer was crazy, as you know.
So, I am hoping for a good summer.
So far I’ve started various seeds - pumpkins, yellow squash, zucchini, cherry tomatoes and hot cherry pepper seeds.
Mike and I also planted some sugar peas a couple of weeks ago now. I keep going to check to see if they’ve come up yet.
Here they are popping through the ground - so excited to see this. These photos were taken May 13 and we planted on May 3. So, 10 days til germination. My experience with planting peas has been so bad - germination is normally very low - so we decided to put down the plastic in order to see if we could warm up the soil enough to get them to come up in a decent amount of time.
The ground is really too cool to plant corn, but I can begin to work on transplanting things like tomatoes and my zucchini and squash plants soon. it’s been a cool April/May, however, so I am trying not to rush things.
May 19 - it’s been cool here the last few days (upper 50sF, lower 60s)…so the ground isn’t warming up very fast - but starting May 20 it is supposed to warm up!
We have never used plastic before when planting - this is a sort of biodegradeable plastic - esp. for the garden - not sure what it’s made out of but it’s pretty thin. The one place where it is missing is because after most of the plants were germinated, part of it blew up and off and I just removed it lest it cover the seedlings that were up.
I think I’ll have to read up on how to put up some string so they can climb it as they grow.
A friend gave me some tomato plants and I planted a lot of cherry tomatoes - which I’m planning on growing in buckets! I find that I don’t do that well with them in the ground - they always seem to get a fungal disease.
My next garden update should hopefully have some newly planted corn, transplanted squash, pumpkins and other things. In the meantime, I’m trying to hold off planting anything that needs warm soil until the ground actually warms up.
If you happen to be a gardener or love plants, we do have some goodies for you!
Just check out these beauties! All are garden related - some vegetable garden and some flower garden!
So there you are - a little bit of something for everyone. I hope you don’t mind the gardening posts - it’s something I kind of need to do to get out of the house and connect with the earth. :) (and my roots)
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
Thanks for coming along with me on this journey!
