When Rachael first started making half yard bundle packs several years ago now, people would ask, “What can I do with them? Since each one is so very different from the other, that is a difficult question to answer with a general answer.

However, I will confess to being able to put my mind to a problem like this - “What to do with what I have?” and coming with at least an idea or two. My whole Upcycled Blues and Upcycled Greens series are a result of my having too many second-hand blues and greens and needing to use them up.

So, I’ve been contemplating this problem. We are actually trying to come up with some “all purpose patterns” that would work with these bundles - especially ones that are more general and not ones that need to be fussy cut, for example, or have huge novelty prints in them.

This is one of those ideas. I took one of my sis’s mixed Coral and Caribbean bundle packs and made this top using those 5 half yard bundles of coral and 5 of the Caribbean. The idea here is not difficult, but I believe, it is quite effective.

So you could use this idea for many of the bundle packs my sis has - as long as there is some variation of shades in the fabrics themselves. Having different shades makes this one much more effective than “all mediums” or “all darks”.

I was so ready to make something smaller than the Test Pattern #49 and maybe some charity quilting I’ve been doing.

It finished at about 70”x94” so this is a nice BIG twin or maybe a full - depending on how much overlap you want on the sides of the mattress.

In order to add interest to this top, I did arrange the fabrics from darkest to lightest.

This makes a bargello or ombre type effect. I used a very pale gray in the background and a white square in the center of the blocks - also to add a bit of pizzazz to a very simple idea.

So this is the overall effect. I didn’t get Rachael to make me a special bundle pack - but rather, I just used what she already made up for everyone.

I just took one bundle from the store in Florida to try to work with and brought it back to Poland with me. I hope to make a couple more tops to give you ideas on how to use this very popular color combination!

These are simply 6” blocks put on point. I found it a quite enjoyable, fast and easy quilt top to make!
