Quilted Twins

Another 2" top Finished #83 in this series!

That clean-out of my sewing room resulted in my finding these blocks. Yes! - LOTS of blocks.

These were my definition of “low volume” blocks - certainly not as low volume as some people call it - but my definition by using what I have.

(AND YES, that clean-out resulted in a lot of ‘finds’ - and truly, I didn’t actually go through all of my drawers or cabinets - just the main two. I know I have another couple of places where there are unfinished projects. For another time.)

Actually there were 60 of these blocks - all pinned together in groups of 10. Then, there were pieces of strips of 4 of these low volume blocks - already strip pieced together. I went ahead and sewed all those little strips of 4 together and ended making up 40 more blocks.

So now I had 100 blocks. For sure they aren’t big (6.5”), but what to do with them? I’ve not worked with 2” strips for a while. I played around with using them as centers to star block in various forms. However, in the end, while they might work, they weren’t what I was in the mood to make.

Then I came up with this idea - and when I saw it, it clicked with me.

I wanted to make this one - and that is a biggie to me. I need to “want to” make something. if I’m trying to make something I’m just not feeling, I either don’t do it, or I talk myself of even going into my sewing room. And that’s bad. It’s usually better just to put things back and go on to something I do want to do. Doing this quilting/sewing isn’t a necessity - (except when Rachael asks me to do something!) I can usually find something that will give me the mo-jo to work hard in my sewing room.

So, I used up 90 of the 100 blocks I had made. It’s a 9x10 layout.

I already had a bunch of these little sections made. So all I had to do was sew them together to make a block.

It’s rather large - a nice queen size top. It makes me feel accomplished to actually have made another big one. Now, it does feel a little bit like I’m cheating since I used up a bunch of blocks I already had together and then the pieces (4x strips)…but that’s a silly idea. I still made them - just not recently!

(What our minds can do to us is just crazy, at times!)

In case you are wondering what else I’ve done with these types of blocks - let me show you. Obviously I use a “light strip” in many of my other quilts but these have what I’m calling low volume - at least to me.

So there you go - now I feel like I’m “home again” in my sewing room.

I’m making progress in there, continuing to uncover the floor.

I still have 6+ bags of charity tops to add borders to - but I’m gradually whittling them down. I want to get to 0 bags in there. Maybe I just need to apply myself for a couple of hours a day for a week and see what I can get done! Ah…we’ll see. That is a project I’ve lost my excitement over, so if I just peck at the chore a little a day, eventually I’ll get to my last bag and then I’ll probably just sit and do them all in day!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.

And yes…I uncovered some 9 patches, some 7x7 patches and other things as well. You’ll see at least one more of them next week, if all goes as planned!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
