End of July/Beginning of August Garden report
The garden has been growing like crazy.
The corn decided to suddenly shoot up and put out tassels and silk. It is surprisingly tall these days! I am actually surprised how tall it is now. Most of it is as tall as I am or taller. I planted two different kinds. One is a bicolor and one is yellow. I don’t remember which is which but I think the bicolor will ripen later.
Zucchini started producing like…zucchini!
I took about 35 to church on Sunday to share. I also made a zucchini cake for after church on Sunday and it was delicious. I really did like it - and may try it again and fine tune it even more.
Pumpkins are growing everywhere. I am not sure how many Jack Be Little (little ones) are actually growing, but I’ve got plants all around the fence line and they are really starting to spread out and grow well. I am seeing some small pumpkins forming and probably August will be a big month for their growth.
Yellow wax beans are growing. We’ve eaten them several times - off of 8 plants that came up originally. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with those 8 plants.
I did a second planting so those plants are growing nicely. They haven’t started producing yet.
I have some green beans which are long and skinny. In fact, this first bean was located on a plant that is shorter than it. Hopefully the plants will shoot out runners to grab the fence and grow UP. It’s a specialty variety that are very long and skinny - a Chinese variety.
Sunflowers have shot up - the ones that are going to. Some are going to be short and have already starting flowering. The tallest ones are volunteers that grew from seed left in the ground from last year’s sunflowers. They are super tall.
I did plant three small cherry tomato plants in a pot on the back patio but they’ve been so slow in coming since I was slow in planting them. I will be thrilled to get anything from them. Here are those plants. There are some tomatoes on the plants now, so I’m very happy about that!
I have some flowers -
on the back patio
in a ring
by the fence line.
And that’s all I have to report! It’s a great month for growing! I took almost all these photos on July 31. A few of the flowers could have been earlier.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
