I got this top finished the other day - this past week. It was one of the ones that caught my eye when I saw it in a quilt show by a favorite You Tuber.

Since she told me the publisher and the name of the pattern, I was able to find the free pattern, download it, choose some fabrics that seemed like they would work and make this top.

It’s rather straightforward. I am definitely not used to making tops with such big pieces! Because of that, it did go together pretty quickly considering.

The “considering” was that it didn’t have much of a pattern - at least not that I really recognized until I was putting the top together. Of course, substituting other fabrics for the original ones didn’t help all that much and the fact that it printed out very light on my printer made for a difficult experience.

You make it in three sections - the half square triangle section, the words part and then the long strips parts which are actually three different ones. So I guess that makes 5 sections, and not three.

Of course, it’s not a large top - it’s only about 62”x77”. That made it go together much, much faster than a large quilt top. In fact, if I am figuring square inches, it is just over half the work of a typical queen size quilt of 90”x100” that I might make.

So it wasn’t my imagination that it went together quickly.

I had a lot of this denim looking cotton fabric so I used it instead of the gray. Then I found a couple of what I thought might be complementing blues and at least one with coral flowers. That kicked started me on to finding other fabrics that worked well together. At least I think so.

There are several things about this pattern that were out of my comfort zone.

The first was the asymmetrical design. I’ve not made anything quite like it before.

The second was how big the pieces were - I’ve done very few with this size pieces - combined with it being a smaller quilt. It made for a relatively quick project.

The third was the applique. I am glad I had already done applique as it wasn’t explained in the pattern at all - we were just told to put it on. But that really wasn’t too difficult. I’ve also never put an applique letter on backwards. That was an odd feeling. (I used Heat ‘n Bond light.) The pattern does give the applique letters.

I had recently done some applique for the Mercantile quilt and am hoping to get busy with Lori Holt’s Home Town quilt top, which is a whole applique quilt. So, this is one of the reasons I am exploring trying some other people’s patterns -- to force myself out of my own comfort zone.

I am delighted with the end product. I do like it. I think it is a fun, quirky quilt - at least it will be once I get it finished. Right now it’s just a fun, quirky quilt TOP.

Overall, I’m glad I made this one - but it’s definitely different from my normal style.
