A couple more XL double sided receiving blankets

While I was going through so many fabrics the last few days I came across the flannel I brought back with me because I had heard a lady who at the time was coming to our church was pregnant. I thought I could make her a couple of these large receiving blankets, because I figure she will give birth some time in the fall.

I haven’t seen her since coming back, but as I came across the fabric, I remembered what I wanted to do with the fabric. I put it aside. I had brought back 4 pieces - two for each blanket as they are double sided.

I didn’t need to look up how to again as I had made them a couple of years ago now and hadn’t forgotten how.

The basic principle is that it is a big square with fabrics right sides facing OUT when finished. So, since my fabric is about 42” wide, I cut it that long. I cut the backing the same size - also out of flannel.

One of them I accidentally cut on the fold when I was squaring it up on my cutting mat. In other words, I cut on a fold line.

When I opened it up I realized it, so I put a seam back in it, and trimmed off the matching piece. The result is that one is about 40” square and not the larger size.

Because these receiving blankets aren’t quilted, I top stitched down the seam allowance in that one where it was made of two pieces lest it fray in the wash and eventually come apart.

Anyway, you pin the edges together and sew around, right sides together, leaving an opening to turn.

Trim the bulk out of the corners and turn. Press.

Top stitch along the edge, which will close up the opening.

Then top stitch about 2” in from that first top stitch line.

You are finished!

They are wonderful, super practical

So the two receiving blankets are now completely finished and waiting to be put to use.

They are awfully cute!

Rachael does have these fabrics. Let me share them with you.

I know these blankets last a long, long time because I made a couple for another young woman a few years back. She used it for her child and later I saw it in use by her younger sister and it still looked great! So…why not make one of these for a new baby in your life!

These would be great rolled up and put in a gift bag with some baby wipes or maybe a sleeper. :) So fun!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
