This quilt top is a variation of a free pattern that I found on the internet.

The pattern is by Marcus Fabrics and you can download it here for free. I would encourage you to go ahead and download it if it is interesting to you because I actually had a hard time finding it when I did a general search even knowing the name of the pattern.

Just do it now. Then come back and read the rest of the post.

Here is how the original pattern looks. It does look cool. That’s why I was attracted to it! I found it interesting. The fabrics are very brown, though, and I’ve been on a bright and happy theme in the past couple of months!

I wanted to add some windows because it felt too dark without windows. I also mentioned before that I didn’t want to live in a house with no windows, so I didn’t want to make this house quilt like that.

I did find another one I’ve considered making - actually I’m still considering it - it’s this one. It has no windows at all….and would be a bigger challenge by far than anything (house themed) I’ve done to date. It’s here and is by Tilda and called My Colourful Town Quilt. I think I’d need more solids…but am considering attempting it. I’m sure the hardest part of this quilt would be finding the fabrics.

Anyway, I decided to go ahead and make this one a large quilt - and I do like it. I did not find the house blocks difficult at all. By adding the windows to the blocks, I expanded my own know-how at least a bit.

I decided to add green and gray sashing to represent the road and some grass. I played around with using some different sky fabrics including using lightning and clouds.

I enjoyed working with all the various colors and houses. I tried to make a variety of the skies and of course the houses. I varied the windows with yellow, white or blue. I used mostly yellow. Why? Because it makes the top brighter and happier feeling!

So that’s the top. I used the original pattern for the sizes of the block and roof, etc. PLUS my own block addition in order to make the actual block with windows. I used 5” wide sashing which meant I cut the gray at 2-1/2” wide and the green is cut at 2”. I used the opposite for the cornerstones. I used a darker gray for the outside border.
