I figured it is time to give you an update on the granny squares that I’m making for my small Granny Squares quilt inspired by Lori Holt’s quilt that I saw in a video featuring mostly her fabrics.

I really am using her fabrics plus other fabrics that I think go with them in color. I have a whole baggy full of them and a few weeks ago I took a couple of hours and sorted out a bunch of squares in groups of 1, 4, 8, and 12 all of the same color and stacked them in this plastic container.

I then work on a few at a time when I get in the mood.

Here is how I do them. First I make the strips and throw them in a pile.

Then I press them all at once and put them back in another pile.

I then put them over in my container where they stay until I’m ready to do some more sewing on them. I don’t work on these every day - but maybe once a week or else a couple of days in a row if I’m feeling it.

So this is where I stand right now.

The box that I have now - current status - 92 finished blocks - trimmed and packed into my bin.

Once I have the squares made they look like this as I trim. I use my 6.5” ruler to trim them down. Here are some pictures showing what I do.

I added this many to the pile this time. Not so many but each group I finish is that many closer to my total needed!

I have about 12 more that are chosen and ready to put together - meaning the squares are pulled out of the baggy and stacked up ready to put together into more blocks. Last time I chose out squares it took me a couple of hours, so this time I’m going to be more careful what time of day I do it. I need to do it when I otherwise wouldn’t be very productive and not choose to do this right during prime work hours.

But still…I will need to work on geting some more groups of squares together pretty soon. Probably by the end of the week.

Here are the glimpses of the inspiration quilt I saw - which I was taken with. I do not have her Granny Square book but I was making Granny Squares before I knew who Lori Holt was, so I probably won’t get it. These are all screen shots of the video from You Tube.

She used a green sashing. I will probably use a blue for the main sashing and a darker blue for the cornerstones. I’m just still thinking about what to use.

I need 182. (I am making this one smaller than hers.)

I have finished 92.

So I have ONLY 90 left to make!

I should get in earnest about deciding on sashing and I could sew sashing to one side of each block as I finish them - at least in groups.

The bad thing about doing granny squares this is that you are definitely working with a bias cut on each edge. However, I am trimming everything down very carefully so I know they are the size I want them to be. If I make my sashings the size I want them to be, I’ll be able to have a nice square quilt.

And that’s my Granny squares report. These are small, so a bit tedious.
