Cultural: A visit to KFC
KFC in the states is hardly one of the premier fast food restaurants--at least not in our little town in Florida.
In Poland, and other places overseas, it is actually a pretty nice restaurant.
We recently got one in our town - in fact, it is only 1.2 miles from our house- which we are still "pinching ourselves" that we have an American fast food restaurant near us. We don't have a big discount store near us, but we have a fast food restaurant. And we're getting a McDonalds in this spot! - only about 200 yards from the KFC. Even closer to our house!
This is how the location looked on Jan. 21. Future McDonald's.
A couple of weeks earlier they were just beginning to get this building down in earnest. It has been sitting here for the whole time we've lived in our house (1996).
This is the status of this location on Jan. 5, 2018. They had just taken the roof off.
But that's not the point of this post. This is to talk about the KFC that opened up just before Christmas. I mentioned it in a blog post just after it opened. We didn't go in it that day, however - the lines were incredibly long.
But we went recently and I decided to let you see the inside.
It was pretty quiet when we first went in. I think we were just a little ahead of the dinner rush. As we were there, a long line began to form - but we beat it.
They don't really serve the big buckets of plain chicken here. Mostly they serve meals - but no mashed potatoes or biscuits - it's Cole slaw or french fries.
The chicken sandwiches are called "Grander" and their wraps are called "Twisters". They have a quesadilla which is a qurrito. They came individually as a meal with a drink and fries, or you can get a box which also has 5 hot wings added.
I gave you a close up of the prices. We usually get the "Big Box" as it has a drink you can refill, fries, a a sandwich or whatever you get like strips or pieces, plus 5 hot wings. To figure the prices in US dollars, just divide by about 3.5. The prices are shown in Polish zlotys.
Since our fast food restaurants have not had "all you can drink" drinks, it is a big deal here. Now, granted the cups are the size of the water cups in the states, but it's something. People in Poland just don't drink the amount of cold drinks that a typical American does.
AND
the cup holds just over a cup of drink - maybe about a cup and a quarter. Sometime I'll measure it.
We can even get ice! Sometimes ice machines don't work in the winter and no one cares.
AND, get this, they put the ketchup out for us to get our own! (This is the first I've EVER seen in Poland!) I was shocked to see such a thing. Usually you get 1 ketchup packet per french fries you order. If you want more, you have to buy them! This is really and truly revolutionary (of course, in a non important way).
And here's our food!
Here's the tray with all the food at once
This is a box they call "B-smart" and it costs about $1.48. There were 3 strips of spicy chicken and a small fries.I think it's actually a very good deal. It's the first time we had ordered it because the girl we were with, Julia, still had to go home and eat. So she only ate the chicken and gave the french fries to my husband.
This is a Classic Box and included fries, a drink, 2 legs and 5 hot wings. This cost 25 zl or $7.35 Sometimes the two pieces of chicken are not two legs - but rather pieces a bit better and bigger.
This is the Grander Box - which is a chicken sandwich - next time I'll unwrap it before I take the picture, a drink, fries, and 5 hot wings. The Grander is a big sandwich so I often take the hot wings home for an evening snack. This collection of food cost 27.50 zl or $8.09
And there you have it! Our new KFC and the food they serve! We are thankful it's here. It gives us an option to meet people in a place that is family friendly and open and bright and new! We're happy it's here!
And now you know!
