The Black Friday phenomenon in Poland
It’s been going on for several years now, but I still laugh at it.
Yes, I’ve seen “Black Friday” promotions here in Warsaw. Yes, in English. No, English is not an official language in Poland.
I’d venture to say most people don’t know what the term “Black” Friday means. To most Polish people, black would be the color of serious clothing - or funeral garb. Usually it signifies something sad/serious. I’ll have to ask some people on Friday if they know why it is called “Black Friday”.
I suspect not. They may or may not realize we use the expression “in the black” to mean making a profit, or at least, “not in debt” - which is “in red”. For those of us who realize that being in the black has to do with economics, then it all makes sense, or at least more sense than otherwise.
But the fact that this kind of sign is now starting to be seen all over our country is, to me, amazing.
I had to go get groceries for our Thanksgiving meal and this is what I saw on the bulletin board outside of Lidl, my favorite grocery store.
At this rate, some of the people will learn English along with their Polish!
And now you know! Of course it is nothing like the deals that are taking place in the states on Black Friday, but I find it interesting anyway. Since they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Poland, the coincidence/timing of it all is interesting. I have to admit that I didn’t expect this particular custom to find its way here. It did not used to be here. In fact, people used to shop for Christmas presents kinda late (for us) - mostly in the last couple of weeks before the actual holiday. Things are definitely changing.
Anyway…as I’m writing this, I’m still full from our own Thanksgiving meal - and am looking forward to a quiet day tomorrow!
But if you find yourself needing something with regards to quilting, be sure to check out what we’ve got going on in the store!
