Transforming small batting pieces to a king size batting

If you’ve been following me at all, you know that a few weeks ago I took a bunch of smaller quilts apart and had the battings from the inside all sitting on my kitchen table. At that point, I counted 60 of them. However, I think I actually have more than that.

I’ve decided to start using them…up.

So, since most of my big quilts are big - I’ve been making a strip of 3 together out of them and making a simple 9 patch out of the batting. This gives me approximately a big enough piece for a queen/king size quilt - pretty much anything I have that needs to be quilted.

These battings were taking the space of two sorta large trash bags, so I’m glad to see them being transformed into something useful to me!.

What I’ve done is since they are approximately the same size, I just sew the edges together with a zigzag stitch.

Then after making a long piece, I sew the two long pieces (made up of 3 smaller ones) together until it is quite long and wide. Two across would do a full size nicely but most of my queen sizes are close to 100” as tops, so obviously I need a bit more than that.

When I finish sewing 9 of these smaller ones together, I will have a king size batting.

I can then use it and cut off the excess and then sew those extra pieces together once again to make another batting - until they are all used up or the pieces are so small it’s not worth it to me.

I’ve made up 3 of these larger battings so far - and will continue to do so until they are used up! If I use 9 at a time, it will go pretty fast!
