"Pointedly Nines" - upcycled blues #43 top finished
What could be nicer than a simple double nine patch quilt on point?
I thought as I was working on my number 42 (Checkered!) I would go ahead and cut up some more 2” strips into squares and make 9 patches so that I could make this one as well - I was making both of these at the same time.
I keep thinking, “I’m almost out!”, but as I dig now through all my crumbs/strings in my last “go through”, I’m finding pieces big enough to cut down into 1.5” or 2” strips.
About 1 minute into the tutorial Edyta references using leftover blues from the BOM that they are selling to making this quilt. I liked it and decided to make a double 9 patch as a result of seeing this. I would have liked to have used 1.5” strips, but I didn’t - I made mine from 2” strips so the blocks are bigger.
As you can see, I didn’t really use a lot of blues in it - but these are leftovers - and I sewed these individually, not strip pieced.
I find making 9 patches very satisfying, though. The only thing I regretted was that they weren’t smaller blocks.

This one was inspired by the MSQC tutorial where Jenny had Edyta Sitar with her. Edyta showed a blue and white quilt made up of 9 patches and I really liked it. They just barely showed it though. That video is here. (Let me make this clear - I am NOT a sponsor of this BOM - in the video- and get nothing from it. I actually think it’s pretty pricey and wouldn’t spend that much on that size of quilt - though if I were going to, this would be a nice choice!)
Anyway, back to the story - as I was beginning to watch this video, I saw that Edyta Sitar was Jenny Doan’s guest and she was showing some of her blue quilts. As a matter of course, she was flipping through them, not really showing them! (I wish they would let us see them much, much longer!) and Edyta mentioned, “You can cut up your leftovers from this BOM as you go along and make up these 9 patches and then make up a simple 9 patch quilt.”
What I glimpsed, however, wasn’t a simple 9 patch or Irish chain, but a double 9 patch. I thought, “Now that’s something I like!” (I’ve made a couple of them before - never fear - it’s not as if I was seeing something new to me - but just a glimpse of one in blue/white!)
So, while I wasn’t doing their blue jelly roll quilt or BOM quilt, I have been most certainly working with blues! I decided then to make a double 9 patch. I’ve always like 9 patches - if there is one block that I claim as my favorite - it’s the 9 patch without a doubt!
So, while I was cutting numerous 1.5” strips out of blues for the “Checkered!” top, occasionally I cut out at least 5 2” squares of blues that were all the same as I chose to make these 9 patches have all the blues part the same.
I went with a cream or off white instead of trying to go with white as well. It’s super simple. I played around with making it a plain double 9 patch, but decided to put them “on point” .
And that’s what I did. And yes, this is one of my most recent finishes from my sewing room!
