"Mini Treasures" tops finished

When I asked my son and daughter in law if their girls needed new quilts, I already knew the answer. The girls are almost 3 but they are as tall as if they were getting close to 4, it seems to me, anyway, from pictures. They've been at the top of their percentile since a few months after birth They have identical twin great aunts who are over 6' tall. Their mom comes from a tall family and their dad is about 6'.

So, I decided to go ahead and make them some quilts.

Here is one of the tops. I'll save the other one for when I show the finished quilts! They are pretty similar but with enough differences so that the two girls and their mom can tell the difference without their names on them!

In addition to monkeys and pink, I put some hat fabric, some green glitter (!), candy, flowers, and even some school/letters because that will be here before we know it!

When I asked their parents what they like, my son answered, 'Monkeys" and their mom said, "Pink!" So, naturally I felt like the quilt needed to have both.

Now the problem here is that I didn't have any good monkey fabric that was yardage. All my fabric was cute - but it leftovers from scrubs, I believe (we got it that way). The pieces couldn't be cut into large pieces as they simply didn't start out large.

This made me go into "hyper creative mode" and try to figure out what in the world I could do. I didn't want to cut that monkey fabric even smaller by making triangles or snowballing the corners, etc. This mean I needed to leave them as rectangles or squares.

I'm showing you quite a few close ups so you can see what I did. I needed to try to bring monkeys and pink together. I could only think of using brown and pink fabric. That, however, unhappily, seems to be a color combination almost completely absent from my very large stash!

I did find that brown print with large pink circles on it - and green, of course. I used it also in the Pink Pandas quilt I made for our friends' youngest daughter.

In the end, yes, I'm quite pleased.

This is a very simple quilt, but I think the piano key border allowed me to put a lot more interest into the top. I hope the girls are delighted with them - I really like these!  The monkey fabric is adorable and the pink is obvious! There are enough other fun fabrics in it so that they can look and look for quite some time at this quilt!
