Polish folks costume series - Warmian costume
I haven’t featured one of these costumes in quite a while, but let me share one today!
The Warmia Region of Poland had their own outfit.
The region we are showing here is in the northeast part of Poland - near the Russian border and near Lithuania: it was inhabited by a Prussian group of people.
This is what it looked like - its popularity fell away by the 19th century - mainly because of the easy availability of store bought/manufactured clothing. - and since that is what the rest of Europe was beginning to wear, they didn’t want to do anything different! (In other words, simply changing fashion!)
For the ladies this outfit included:
a bonnet
a white linen top
a skirt or sleeveless dress of plain fabric or homespun woolen cloth
an apron of striped or checked fabric.
A married lady wore a jacket instead of a corset and always had on a bonnet. (We see this in churches still here - more women here in this area still wear something on their heads if they are married - the unmarried do not).
The '“crowning glory” of this outfit was the bonnet which had elaborate embroidery using gold thread - on the back - on the top (or the crown).
Usually they bought this from nuns who specialized in embroidery - the average villager didn’t know how to do it.
Aren’t they pretty?
Unmarried women often didn’t wear these bonnets and if they did, they had a plain band instead of the fancy embroidery.
Each one of the regions had something specific about their clothing. In the Warmian region the women wore these traditional outfits longer than the men did.
Naturally people don’t dress like this nowadays - at least not normally. For special dances or historical days they might.
And now you know! One more little tidbit in your brain!
But aren’t those hats/bonnets pretty? I think so!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
