"Autumn Majesty" - new top finished
I had hoped to make 3 or 4 tops this fall with fall colors. Recently I was browsing a weather website and came across this photo about leaves - and saved it.
I thought it was a great summary of fall colors - at least here in Poland - of the major trees that we have. We also have reds in addition to this especially with some sort of smallish trees that seem to almost spring up overnight - a kind of nuisance thing, actually. But it is beautiful in the fall as the foliage turns a brilliant red!
Bear Paws Deluxe
Anyway, My first one was Bear Paws Deluxe. Then I had an idea to try another Courthouse Steps design. I know, it can be sort of ho-hum, but I really liked what I had worked up. I then began to make the 110 blocks that I needed.
However in the process of making them I began to get uncomfortable with the design - nothing wrong with it- I just wanted something a bit more exciting! So I went back to my EQ file where I had spent quite a bit of time just playing around with those courthouse steps blocks and relooked at all the things I had worked up and reconsidered them.
This is was one of those designs.
Courthouse steps blocks on point with cream side setting triangles. These courthouse steps blocks have a dark brown square defining the edges of the color change. I combined it with star blocks - some with light background and some with darks - with the star points using colors that would show up in contrast with the background.
(I was well on the way to having all the courthouse steps blocks finished when I changed my plan.)

Because I didn’t use anything like 110 courthouse steps blocks in this quilt guess what that means? Yes! I have almost 50 of these leftover - I think I was making too many, anyway! So, of course I now need to come up with another design using the same courthouse steps blocks (the ones in the middle) with something else.
So look for that next one to also use the courthouse steps block - probably NOT on point!
Then, I still had ONE more I want to get done before Thanksgiving! I think I may run out of time!
Because this is one of those quilts that is on point - I thought it might be nice to show you how I put it together.

Here are some pictures that show the progress as I actually sewed those rows together. Those of you who already know how to put on point rows together, then this is “old hat” but some haven’t done it yet. It almost feels like magic as you sew them together and the design forms - on the diagonal!
Here’s another view! The coloration of the blocks was random. I see after completion that I got a lot of yellow in that one spot in the middle. I had attempted to actually lay it out first but got overwhelmed because the blocks were so scrappy - I didn’t think it would really matter so I really just grabbed whatever the next block was in that pile as I put them together in rows.
This is one of those things I did manage to get together in between all the charity quilting!
Putting this top together (once the blocks were made) took the better part of a day - though I did need to leave in the middle of it to go see someone for a couple of hours! I didn’t understand exactly why it took so long- but it did. GRRR. But I kept getting visual reinforcement when I got each row added, so it kept me going.

These are the autumn colored quilts made from upcycleds only - it’s become sort of a mini series.
And to think - a few years ago I would have told you that I strongly disliked “brown” quilts!
Guess I’ve changed a bit in the intervening years! It happens!
