"Old World Fantasy" - Week 4

Well, here we are - back to castles and all things “Old World”.

Malbork.jpg

Before I go any farther with this mystery quilt - I wanted to say “Thank you” to those of you who are doing it. Thank you for your patience with me and thanks for playing along!

This is the first time I’ve written up a quilt as a mystery - so a lot of this is new for me. And of course, like my choosing a complex Norman Rockwell cross stitch pattern to make as one of my very first projects, I decide to offer a mystery quilt in 2 colors and 3 sizes!

I have already made the red/brown/gold one and am doing the gray/blue one as I go along, so at least I am confident that the pattern I am giving WILL result in a quilt!! LOL

(And my husband wants us to put it on the bed - but I’ve not done that yet!)

For the Blue/Gray Quilt:

We are going to do some CUTTING and some cutting and piecing. How fun is that?

First of all - let’s go back to the constants: royal blue/ dark gray and a light gray that you chose:

Here are mine - in case you forgot

From the royal blue constant:

Cut 3.5” squares:

  • lap - 4

  • full - 12

  • queen - 16

Go ahead and put them in one of your plastic bags - we aren’t going to use them today.

Now for something else :

From constant dark gray and royal blue: - cut a strip of 2” x width of fabric (WOF)

and from your light gray constant - a strip 3.5”x WOF like this:

Sew these three strips together and press open:

Trim off 2” segments like this:

You will need this many segments that look like this for each size:

  • lap - 8

  • full - 24

  • queen - 32

(Depending on the length of your strips - you will probably need to make two “strip sets” if you are making the full or queen size quilt.)

Now - from your constant LIGHT gray:

Cut 2”x3.5”:

  • lap - 8

  • full - 24

  • queen - 32

Now put those constants away and let’s change gears. Get out some very light grays and light blues:

Here are some I’m using.

Here are some I’m using.

You will need to cut these pieces from these very lights. Today we aren’t going to sew with them—I just need you to cut them and put them in your little zipper bags. I need you to do this today. Next week we will play some more with the very light blues/grays.

Feel free to mix and match these very lights. Do not worry - just keep them light: It doesn’t matter how many blues or grays you use!

Here’s a hint if you used a light gray as the corner of this piece - cut a lighter gray or a lighter blue than these pieces which you made last week:
