"Old World Fantasy" - Week 5

Has this week gone by fast or what?

Here’s another installment of our Mystery Quilt!

If you are new to reading here, we are working on a mystery quilt with the clues given out weekly— on Fridays.

I am offering it in two colorways - red/brown/gold and blue/gray. Here we go with week 5!

For the Blue/Gray Quilt:

First of all, just for reference, get out a piece of your “constant gray”. Here’s mine:

20200423_084450.jpg

From your grays and blues, find some “different from” your constant. They can be EITHER Lighter OR Darker than your constant.

I am choosing these - 2 grays and 2 blues.

I am making the lap size of this blue one since I already made the brown/red/gold one in queen. These are what I chose.

However, if I had darker than the gray constant, I could choose that as well. It is best if they aren’t your “lightest” that you have. Don’t be afraid of color here! You could also go with a nice darker blue than I am showing - just don’t use your constant royal blue or constant gray here!

From those each of those pieces that are “different” from this gray constant, cut pieces that are 3.5”x6.5” like this in sets of 4:

20200423_085105.jpg

You need this many:

  • lap - 4 sets of 4 pieces cut 3.5”x6.5”

  • full - 12 sets of 4 pieces cut 3.5”x6.5

  • queen - 16 sets of 4 pieces cut 3.5”x6.5

Remember - you can definitely “repeat” colors. I did in my larger quilt! IOW, you do not need 12 or 16 DIFFERENT colors for these pieces.

Now take those and put them away in your zipper bags. We aren’t actually going to use them today - just wanted them cut up.

Next - we are going to make these units: Don’t kill me, please?

How to do these:

Now, dig around back in your lightest grays and lightest blues and find as many as you have. It would be nice if you had 6 different ones, but if you only have 3 or 4, that is fine as well. We’ll “make do”. The wonderful thing about scrappy quilts is that they are pretty forgiving.

Here are what I dug out:

I debated leaving out that blue with the stars as it is a tad bit darker than the rest (and I used it in the set cut above) but I decided to leave it in for “sparkle! Do what you want. I have 7 fabrics here.

Cut off a strip of each at 1.5” . If your scraps are short - cut more than one 1.5” strip. We are going to make strip sets. Here it is difficult to tell you exactly how many to cut because, for example, some of my fabrics were 14” long, and some 60”. So, just start by cutting a strip or two of each color. Not too much - we want as little waste as possible and you can always cut more strips as needed.

Here is what I cut from these grays/light blues. They are 1.5” wide by as long as I could.

Now I took these to my machine and sewed them in a set of 6. I alternated sewing directions. For example, I sewed 2 strips together and then two more, and then two more. Then I sewed, starting from the opposite direction to sew the the strips together:

Then I took my strips sewn together to the ironing board and pressed flat. I actually made 3 “sets” as some of my light blues were short. I made them all different. I f you are making a lot, then feel free to vary up the placement of the strips. I was trying for variety:

Now, cut off 1.5” segments.

I placed the two shorter pieces on top of each and cut at the time time. I cut off 1.5” segments. Even in these pictures you can see how my one blue is darker than the others. I decided I could live with it.

Now you have these:

You need this many of those 6 piece segments for this size of quilt:

  • lap - 32

  • full - 96

  • queen - 128

Ok, for the lap quilt, this was easy…but not so quick for the queen! But that is all for this week.

We’ll pick up next week. Put all your pieces away and breathe a sigh of relief! Now back to your other stuff!

For the Red/Brown/Gold quilt:

First of all, just for reference, get out a piece of your “constant gold”. Here’s mine:

From your tans and other browns, find some “different from” your constant. They can be EITHER Lighter OR Darker than your constant.

I am choosing these -

From those each of those pieces that are “different” from this gold constant, cut pieces that are 3.5”x6.5” like this in sets of 4:

Now, dig around back in your lightest creams and tans and find as many as you have. It would be nice if you had 6 different ones, but if you only have 3 or 4, that is fine as well. We’ll “make do”. The wonderful thing about scrappy quilts is that they are pretty forgiving.

The photo above is what I cut off. I had a variety of lengths.

I then went to my sewing machine and sewed them together, alternating directions to minimize the bowing that tends to happen when sewing long, skinny strips together:

Then I took my strips sewn together to the ironing board and pressed flat.

Make a variety of color arrangements in your strip sets if possible. When you are making the larger quilts, that is easy as you will need to make multiple strip sets. My pieces for this picture are short, so I won’t get very many pieces from each strip set:

Now, cut off 1.5” segments:

Here is my collection of pieces:
