"Old World Fantasy" - Week 3
Back to the mystery quilt!
Yes, we are!
I know - it’s Easter weekend. For some of you, tradition says you do a lot of things above and beyond your normal weekend activities. Today’s clue isn’t very hard or long—hopefully. I suppose it depends on what size quilt you are doing!
For the Blue/Gray Quilt:
Leave the “constants” in your box/container. Let’s use something else this week!
We are going to do some cutting and some piecing.
From your royal blues -
(Mine are very limited in scope - I about used up everything I had on my blue bargello I made earlier this year!)
Cut these pieces:
2”x 3.5”
lap - 8
full - 14
queen - 16
3”x3.5”
lap - 10
full - 26
queen- 34
3”x4”
lap - 8
full - 14
queen - 16
3”x 8.5”
lap - 10
full - 26
queen - 34
From your grays -
They can be either lighter or a darker gray than your royal blue - some contrast is nice. Try not to use a gray with the exact same level of dark/light (value) as your blues. Look at my photos for an example. It won’t “kill your quilt” if you don’t have a lot of contrast in value - but it makes it more interesting if it does.
From a variety of grays -
3” squares -
lap - cut 28
full - cut 66
queen - cut 84
These are what your segments are going to look like today:
Many of you can do them just by looking:
Cut your 2”x3.5” and your 3”x3.5” pieces and put them to the side. You are done with them for today.
Using your gray 3” squares, “snowball” your corners of your 3”x8.5” strips and your 3”x4” EXACTLY as shown.
Here are some pictures:
Using your iron, crease a line in each gray square diagonally across the middle
Place the opened back up gray square and place it on the blue rectangle like this:
Stitch on those folded lines as shown:
I usually stitch again about 1/2” away from that first stitching towards the outside of the crease as shown (to make a bonus triangle). You don’t need to do this if you don’t want to.
Trim between the lines of stitching like this:
Fold out the gray corners like this and press well: In sort of “slang quilterese” it is called “snowballing a corner”. So “congratulations - you have now “snowballed a corner”. If you know that term it will help you in your quilting journey.
Make this many of these segments:
lap - 10
full - 26
queen - 34
For the last “segment” for today’s clue - make this piece:
Using the same method as you just did with your longer piece, “snowball” the corner of this 3”x4” rectangle as this one shows.
Make:
lap - 8
full - 14
queen - 16
You are finished for this week! Now go and enjoy your weekend! Come back next week for some more cutting and piecing!
Oh…save those “bonus triangles” in a separate baggie - or at least put them with your leftovers along with all your larger scraps.
Brown/Red/Gold quilt:
From your reds and browns - Do NOT use your constants! Cut half red/half brown if you wish.
I’m going to show it using reds. I would make half reds and half browns for variety if possible.
Cut these pieces:
2”x 3.5”
lap - 8
full - 14
queen - 16
3”x3.5”
lap - 10
full - 26
queen- 34
3”x4”
lap - 8
full - 14
queen - 16
3”x 8.5”
lap - 10
full - 26
queen - 34
From OTHER reds/browns/golds -
Try to go for lighter or darker than the ones which you just cut. You want some contrast in value if at all possible. Check out the photos.
3” squares -
lap - cut 28
full - cut 66
queen - cut 84

If you want a summary of today’s “clue” - click on the picture below and a pdf will pop up.
And don’t forget you can always just go to the page on the website and get the clues “week by week”. Have any of you clicked on the place holder on that page for weeks 4, 5 and 6 just to check and see if I actually have the clues up yet?
Hmmm.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
