Blogging while running a shop!
A few years ago I was playing Scrabble on line and blog wasn’t considered a word yet. Truthfully, it was a new concept in the internet world, but it was definitely a word. A real word. Just like vlog is now a word. A blog is normally considered to be a diary - only on the internet. A vlog would be tales of your everyday life, but in video form.
I told my sis yesterday that it would be hard for the owner of a business to write a daily blog because there isn’t enough “different” to talk about.
Much of running a business is simply not interesting enough to write about - or at least not very often.
cleaning up,
straightening shelves,
putting fabrics away,
helping customers with their fabrics -
It’s all part of what is involved with running a shop. Then there are also these things --
coming up with new bundle pack,
checking out the sales emails,
(and ordering fabrics),
paying sales tax,
paying employees, and
keeping on top of other legal stuff
Hardly anyone would really like to hear about most of that.
I think when most people think of the store, they think of fabric. That is what excites most quilters. Watching them come through the door and see their eyes get big is fun. They just stand there when they come in the door. Several have told me that the first time they come, they hardly buy anything. It’s the second time that they come really prepared. The first time - it’s all just “too much”.
So what did I do today?
Today we had a group come in this morning and then the store was open just after the group left. So, from about 10 am, we’ve had customers in. I was cutting some, putting fabric away, walking around talking with people, showing people around, trying to help them find what they need, and generally making myself useful. This morning before all that, however, I spent an hour and a half “bolting” some pieces of fabric that we have.
We are trying to organize a certain section of some fabric that we had purchased but not yet dealt with - and that involves my putting pieces on to bolts so that they can more easily be sold.
And that’s what I’ve been doing. I was working on finding fabrics for the new orders on line when I just disappeared back here to a computer back in the “Chop Shop” (where Rachael does a lot of cutting) to write this blog post. I just had to get off my feet. I have a whole new appreciation for those of you have to stand up 8 hours straight working a register or walking around, dealing with people!
I have 5 small-ish tops to finish up the binding and then I can share them! Just gotta find the time. :)
I told you my 24 hours in Poland is longer than my 24 hours in the USA, right? It must be!
I would like to stop and add that since being here, I’ve seen the most interesting masks! They have restored my faith in all of our homemade masks! Most people coming in the store are wearing something that someone made.
That is a contrast to what I saw on my trip over which was almost all the disposable kind.
Anyway, that’s all. I need to get back out there and help find fabrics or put them away and quit loafing!
