2020 - "Year of the Strips" - February report

Well, as some of you realize, I got hit hard with sickness in February. I also wasn’t as diligent about as I should have been before I got sick.

As a result…

I have been giving this project a lot of attention this past week. Yes - 1 to 2 hours a day. That means, I’ve been cutting up scraps and sorting various other small pieces. I have literally “bags” of scraps to either sort or cut up. If I saved them as crumbs, I am going back through them and deciding if they are to be used as kindling or given to my friend for use with the mentally ill - a friend of hers does craft projects with them. Not saving crumbs at the moment.

I do have some partially made things that I’m saving either for another “Hot Mess” type quilt or to make into quilted hearts.

I have discovered that I produce crumbs so fast that should I decide to make more crumb quilts/string quilts - it’s a matter of turning my chair and checking in a different place in my sewing room and I have some more small leftover pieces I can use. They just multiply!

I’m finding it interesting as I go back through to find things from quilts I made - the beige wedding quilt, the big cats quilts and other ones I made for our friends in Central Asia, the various charity quilts and such. I am finding it fascinating!

Anyway…

I really gave this project my attention this past week - and cut a lot.

Here are my bags:

The 1.5” totaled 3 kg or 6.61 lbs.

The 2” strips ended up being 6.75 kg or 14.88 lbs

Don’t worry - I didn’t count the weight of the bucket!

The 2.5” strips ended up being 5.65 kg or 12.46 lbs.

This is not a little bit this time! I had some nice big pieces to go ahead and cut into strips which made it go faster.
So now this is where I stand on this project:

These are the bags that I have so far from this year. From left - 1.5”, middle is 2” and the right is 2.5”.

I also sorted all the little bits and pieces after trimming into two groups - one group for kindling and one to to be given to my friend.

For kindling. these are slivers or otherwise unworthy pieces.

The smallest kindling pieces are here - and this isn’t all - I’ve been shuffling them to the fireplace as I go along - this was from one day of trimming -

But I kept out these “little bit better and bigger pieces for my friend’s friend to use with the mentally ill - they are more of what I think of strings - usually smaller than 1.5” strips and/or fabric I was so sick of - there is one print I had over 100 meters of and I’m getting to the end of it - frankly I don’t care if I don’t work with it again! I’ve been tossing almost all of those my friend’s way

And there you are! This project report! It’s been important this week and a reminder to me to work on it 15-30 min a day so that I don’t feel like I need to give it 2 hours a day for one week! I won’t do that again!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!

Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
