Mosaic - using 1.5" strips - part 1

This one is going to take so much time - I’ve decided to let you share the joy of watching this one form in front of our eyes. I also know if I commit to a weekly blog post update on it, I will work better on it than if I don’t. So, here goes - I will do my best to update this one regularly until I finish it.

I’ve not gotten much done it, but I can see that I am going to like it. However, it is definitely tedious already!

And slow going!

I am making it about 96” wide x not sure how long at this point. I will measure and stop at a good stopping point somewhere around 100-105” long.

When I start making a top like this - the first part is slower than the last part because I have to do so much cutting to get me going.

Here are some pictures from what I’m doing.

At some point in the future I’ll explain some of my time saving strategies to help me move along a little faster, though under no circumstances should anyone be thinking working with 1” at a time is fast.

I’ve been doing some cutting every day for a several days now and when I’ve cut for a few minutes, I take the cut up 1.5”x2.5” pieces and put them in this bucket to be used. Maybe this will help me avoid the extreme color variation issue I had with the 2.5”x4.5” Mosaic I made where I tended to use a lot of greens in one part and reds/oranges in a different part - so much so that it was noticeable.

I do have a nice large bag (30 gallon) of already cut up 1.5” strips so I am pulling from it - at this point for both the white and the colorful parts. I may have to resort to using new white for the white parts - but we’ll see. I’m not there yet by any means.

My goal here is to use up my 1.5” strips. However, if you really just wanted to use up extra 2.5” strips, you could strip piece and cut up segments that way as well - would work great for that. I’ll show that next time for those of you who might not “get it”.

I am using this layout.

In case you can’t read the words, they say “Repeat rows 7-18 until at a point you want to stop”.

And now you know—I’ve finally started this one - something I’ve been thinking about for some time.

I’ve not done “that many” things with these small 1.5” strips/squares - but maybe I just need to change that. I really do like the “look” you can get with small (1” finished strips and squares).

Want to see what I have done to date with this size?

Here they are!

I see that a good bit of what I’ve done with this size - at least recently - was during the Upcycled Blues series. The last 8 shown were actually quite old - as in between 7-8 years ago now that I made them.

That’s it for today!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
